It may be a private building, but it's open to the public. A lack of regular maintenance and inspections is most likely one of the causes.
I fully agree, unfortunately, those were apparently his words (Abinader). Public buildings are being controlled, privately owned no, no matter what the purpose?

My understanding is the address/place of death on the death certificates is basically the address of the Jet Set.

This is correct, the news stated that the address on the certificates is exactly that of this particular building. Yet, there was doubt whether or not that would cause issues. Hopefully not. I might be naive but I was kind of surprised that death certificates in the DR are filled out by hand... Just thinking margin of error and what that could cause...

Normally they are not but the need for them was urgent so I am assuming they did the best they could. Back in the day everything was filled out or typed out by hand.

So that owner knew ahead of time by putting under an corporation. Just great. He walks freely then? we shall see
Probably the most common action for business owners in the DR.

All of my properties were under corporations.

You own a house in Punta Cana? If it's not in the name of a corporation, you better hope you never hit a kid on a motorcycle.

He knew what ahead of time? Do you have any idea how many businesses are under a corporation rather than a private owner? Walks freely from what? Do you have inside information that we do not have? As JD posted previously, this owner was very close friends with many who frequented the Jet Set, many who tragically died there. Do you really think he would do something on purpose that would cause this tragedy?

You all just don’t get it. Seriously. 231 people lost their lives with Angel, and 186 are still in the hospital who knows for how long and we’re praying they survive. And now you’re telling me it’s common practice in the Dominican Republic for business owners to register under a corporation just to shield themselves from responsibility when tragedy strikes? That’s unacceptable.

Let’s be real about the Jet Set tragedy: this wasn’t some random accident. It happened because the owner neglected the building. After a lightning-induced fire, he had the chance to replace the roof properly but instead, he went the cheap route and patched it up. Connections, power, and fame don’t matter here. It’s about safety, plain and simple. When you’re responsible for a space people gather in, you take care of it. Period.

I truly hope he faces justice because he deserves to. Actions have consequences.

I rest my case.

What does having a property in a registered corporation have to do with what happened at Jet Set, and who is Angel?

Do you have proof of this? Because those are some serious accusations you're throwing out there. Also, you say you live in Cap Cana, so you would know almost every property in Cap Cana is registered under a business. Again, MiamiDRGuy you are over the top. I am beginning to think you do not know much about the DR.

This is the same guy that says he pays $282 common charges in Cap Cana. He must have pitched a tent in a parking lot……

It is not a secret about the fire, it was all over the news. BUT you do not know that is what caused this tragedy, do you? You are bringing forward a number of accusations that at this point have no merit.

We sue-happy Americans have been doing this for generations.

I think this is far to complicated a topic for us here on dr1. We will have to see how it plays out legally. Many are definitely outraged that something like this could happen at a famous night club in Santo Domingo. I used to go out a lot in Santo Domingo including to Jet Set. I actually have met Janny Ventura the guy who looked a bit like Johnny Ventura. He had down syndrome or something like that and was very popular in the artistic community. I met him in the Colonial Zone.

The DR is practically an unknown country in my home country, yet this roof collapse has made it to the yellow press twice in a week, which practically never happens. So on an international scale this is not meaningless either.

My biggest confusion comes from the stated facts that almost all the support for the roof was disassembled (the question still remains, who thought this was a good idea), heavy machinery and new layers of concrete put on top of the old one and debris falling regularly from the roof before this happened (as pointed out in the press. So these I would consider rather simple things to note, yet nobody did anything and this accident took place.

Almost all businesses of any size are held in a corporation here in the DR. It's probably been in a corporation since the day it opened 50 years ago. That's no different than in most other countries. Only a very small business like a colmado maybe wouldn't be held in a corporation.

Same in my home country. They only know about Haiti and Cuba for disasters.
