Wondering... how many gov't people of all sectors and levels who were not on the job visited the extremely popular club for their own entertainment, enjoyment? These people would have observed the risks of its environment and yet did not see evil, hear evil, of speak evil of this site. Fatalism!

Regards,

C'mon dude. That's how it's done almost everywhere.
Incorporation is done primarily for income tax purposes and to limit financial liability. Hence the LTD at the end of Corporate Names. Sometimes it’s LLC (limited liability corporation). You incorporate your business and, if it fails, you don’t lose your house or personal belongings. That’s smart. No business man has a crystal ball to see the future success or failure of his business and certainly not a disaster of this scale. That’s the purpose of business insurance.

Totally agree PJT. Fatalism, God’s will, Stoicism, call it what you will. It is one of the underpinnings of previous and current government management in the DR. Reflected not only by the causes for the disaster but also in the President’s public announcement about no inspections required. I was shocked when he announced that. It’s a blatant admission of negligence and guilt.

The negligence is reflected in many other ways not just past and current disasters, also by lack of enforcement of highway rules and the resulting death rate, one of the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean. Also by the lack of proper investigation procedures by the enforcement agencies, lack of proper municipal planning and development, lack of concern for the dependable delivery of basics like drinking water and electricity.

The role of any elected body is peace, order, and good government. A high bar yet to be achieved in the DR. Let’s see if this disaster is the catalyst for significant positive change in DR governance. My realistic side says no to major changes but my optimistic side hopes for signs of small positive steps.

The DR is practically an unknown country in my home country, yet this roof collapse has made it to the yellow press twice in a week, which practically never happens. So on an international scale this is not meaningless either.

My biggest confusion comes from the stated facts that almost all the support for the roof was disassembled (the question still remains, who thought this was a good idea), heavy machinery and new layers of concrete put on top of the old one and debris falling regularly from the roof before this happened (as pointed out in the press. So these I would consider rather simple things to note, yet nobody did anything and this accident took place.
Still getting coverage by North American media although it’s mostly about the lawsuits now.

I’m guessing he meant the dead are with the angels and EITMLI5 is an emoji designation code?
I am guessing quite a lot of dual citizens Dominican-American were there. There were many Venezuelans too.

I forget the exact number, but news said 8-9 Americans died. I presumed dual-citizens. Yes, Venezuelans and Colombians too.

EITLMLI5 is possibly a 'Explain It To Me Like I'm 5' with an extra L added after the 'T' for emotion
That makes sense. I have up paying attention to acronyms when I retired from the Federal government.

Cabarete, DR
This digital shorthand is getting out of control.
This was originally posted by JD Jones, asking MiamiDRGuy to explain his post. I screwed up by adding an extra L in my google search and that cost me some head scratching as well. Sorry, my bad.
I am more used to ELI5 (Explain Like I am 5)

I've never heard that expression before so I wouldn't have figured that one out either. Some people seem to have their own favorite expressions and abbreviate them thinking it will be obvious to everyone..

Given how many super important well connected people died, does anyone really believe that the owner of this club will walk free? If he hasn't returned to DR yet I think he'd be very well advised never to come back. The judiciary is pretty much owned and controlled by those families, someone is going to have to pay for their losses.

This will be a very long process, with a number of lawsuits obviously. As posted previously the owner (family) is very close to many who died that night. Walk free meaning jailed? I doubt it. Now having to pay financially is another story.

My take also. The owner or his insurance company as well as the government will bleed big money by the time this is all said and done. That might generate enough concern on the part of property owners and government to do better in the future. That liability keeps governments and businesses on their toes in most developed democratic countries.

Sadly a Costa Rican women as well according to Dominican Today.

"41-year-old Costa Rican woman is the 226th victim of collapse in the Jet Set"
