JetBlue asked if I had a return ticket or DR residency

Mauricio,

No doubt the airlines do not have any way of checking the validity of residency info they enter into the system, that would be done here in the DR at some later date.

The airline is just performing their due diligence - no return ticket, why not? Oh you are a resident, kickity kick, good to go. The flight manifest listing all passengers is then sent to the DR after the gate closes and arrives usually before the flight is in the air. No return ticket, then the residency info entered by the airline appears next to the passenger name.

Voila, with the click of a button, that residency information could be verified if there is a previous entry in the DR residency database or added as new info subject to verification at a later time. Eventually, when the DR swipes a passport, the classification of that traveler will be displayed as a tourist, visa entry or resident.

We can probably safely extrapolate into the future and say with some degree of confidence that the airlines will soon pick up on the pattern of last minute purchased return tickets that are subsequently cancelled for a cash refund. Because the airlines have zero interest in acting as a temporary facilitation agent, if the practice becomes widespread, then refunds on the return portion of a trip will be changed to credits to be used on a future flight. Hanging onto your money is all the airline really cares about.

I think you are extrapolating too much.

I highly DOUBT that DR Immigration is checking who has a one way ticket from some Manifest , once you get past check in here in the USA..
Have done it bunch of times ( one way ticket) , and got caught twice, by jet blue..
There are so many HACKER fares ( the name of a booking involving 2 diff airlines for best price ) that there is NO WAY an Airline "knows 100 % " if you have a return flight, unless its with THEM
So theee is no way they are going to "ALERT" The Dom Republic Immigration that you got a one way ticket, cuz if that info is not accurate, thats just busy and wasted work for Immigration..
and we all know how much Dominicans love Extra work.. (sarcasm smilie here)
All they care about is that your passport is valid, and they glance at your pattern of Visiting for a week, or a month or what have you.. you are good to go. the most they might do is let you know you got 30 days ( which they have DONE on occasion, and i guess thats based on the limitations of the Tourist Card)
You Expats are reading too much into this.. maybe cuz you stay for months or years at a time... quite a few of us people visit the DR 4-10 times a year, for shorter stays. and sometimes they check for return ticket sometimes they dont. its as simple as that.
Its almost Random.

I've flown one way tickets to DR for years -- never asked about a R/T ticket.

But for $10 I can make a fake residency cedula, laminated and everything. As if some gate lice clerk can discern if it's real or not.

well if that is the sort of person you are,,I sincerely hope that you are caught very soon and imprisoned

Its the Luck of the draw sometimes you get asked for a return ticket or not if they are being more diligent with it now so be it.

This happened to me 2 Months ago while leaving BWI airport in Baltimore on Delta.

The agent said that i needed a return flight. I told him that i lived in the Dominican republic.
i showed him a copy of my lease agreement for my apartment, my electric bill in my name.my water bill in my name, & my Tricom cable, phone and internet account all in my name and current.

He still said that i had to buy a return ticket. So i ask to speak with his manager.

After showing her the same documents,,she showed the agent where his screen said that a person without a return ticket " may " be denied entry into the country and that it did not say " shall "be denied entry..

Then she stated to him, she stated that the decision to allow me entry into The Dominican Republic would be made at the airport in Santiago , not at the Delta counter in Baltimore.

I am in the United States now. I return to Santiago next month. I bought a round trip ticket on American when i left.
We will see what happens when i go to the airport.

Oh yes Bob the country has rules Been here long enough to know them well. They are more along the lines of CC thoughts than yours and CDN gringo don't let my DR1 join date fool you I have been here much longer .My point is this is not Canada Or the USA Its The DR where you can murder someone and buy your way out of it faster and cheaper! So quit your residency 1st world thinking sermons out if every single thread on this forum.
My point being is that if you continue thinking like your back home and apply those same rules here you will be the only one playing by your rules.

I have only been asked about a return flight when I check in a bag at the counter. But if I do not check a bag, nobody at the gate check or security has ever asked. And, at the counter, they only needed to see a copy of my itinerary showing a return flight.

I for one am not from The USA but I have to travel through there to get to the DR so I really can not buy a 1 way ticket straight to the DR so never really had these problems because I always have a return ticket. Then again for me to fly here usually costs between 800 - 1300 $ depending on season.

www.
DR1 Daily News reported on the new system on 23 April 2015. This means the online database should be working as of 1 May 2015. Strongly recommend against presenting a forged residency card or trying to bribe an immigration officer.

Migration to accept online applications only
The Migration Agency (DGM) has announced that the test period for the new Electronic Foreigner Registration System has been concluded. As of 1 May 2015, requests for services related to provisional or permanent residency in the resident or non-resident categories need to apply online at Direccion General de Migracion under Servicios de Extranjeria.

Migration says that for all inquiries a username must be obtained by filling out an online appointment, and for sending data on biometrics, payments, lab tests and others required for the procedure. Migration says that the applicants will be notified via email.

This Electronic Foreigner Registration System is aimed at ensuring that applicants no longer have to spend long hours waiting at the Migration offices.

So, at the bottom of the temporary residency info, it says:
REQUIREMENTS FOR TEMPORARY RESIDENCE WORK WILL BE THE SAME EXCEPT AS FOLLOWS:
1.-Replace residence visa (RS) by a multiple business visa (NM1) that is created for this type of residence. (This record if handwritten visa stamp shall endorse it with a certification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX).
Work of the company 2. Contract for which they work, registered by the Ministry of Labour.
3. The Guarantor shall always be the contracting company of the applicant.
This residence as its name says it is only allowed for cases that their stay in the country is exclusively for work purposes.

That says to me that a business visa can be the same as a residency visa. My wife could infect apply for temp residency after she got the business visa.

Sounds right?

I left POP on 4/21 and had my residency info put into the computer system.
Nobody knew if that info was stored permanently or just entered to waive the overstay fee.
I will check on my June return to see if they recognize me in the system.

As for buying a return ticket and quickly cancelling same to obviate the R/T requirement............

The airlines may catch on to that.

In days gone by, the only way to get a cheap air price was to have a Saturday night stay..
people used to book 'back to back' tix to avoid this... staggered flights to make it appear you were 'Saturday nighting ' it

Flopped... the airlines caught on ..........
same may happen here..... you could be forced into a non-refundable ticket.....OUCH !!

who said life on the lam was easy ???

This country is so corrupt, and the Ridiculous TAXES we pay just to LAND at POP airport, thats the Real Criminal activity..
They Fleece us at every turn.. Even the Immigration guy has the B a lls to write
" TIP, or Propina" on a slip of paper as you are trying to enter the country..
So lighten up Francis.
