It’s not on the official list for Covid-19 treatments, but in the Dominican Republic, physicians at private and public hospitals regularly prescribe the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin to people who suspect they may have caught the virus. The reasons: The drug is readily available at pharmacies without prescription, is low cost, and has low side effects with the correct dose.

Dr. Jose Natalio Redondo of Grupo Rescue with hospitals affiliated in Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and La Romana says they have treated around 6,000 patients with ivermectin with a high success rate.

The advantage of ivermectin, says Redondo, is that it is a well-known and studied drug because it has been used for more than 30 years in humans and for about 45 years in animals. He said more than one trillion doses per year are prescribed without side effects all around the world.

It would be better if they gave any drug to someone they know, rather than suspect, has the virus, but I understand testing can be a problem and they are trying to be proactive. Then more can be determined about the success of ivermectin treatment.

We desperately need well documented study to confirm the most effective dosage and whether the treatment itself has sufficient merit to apply it as a broad treatment.

A post above mentions taking six ivermectin tablets all at the same time but does not indicate the dosage of those tablets. That sounds a bit hinky to me and a bit too much of the drug all at once for every patient as a general rule. It would be nice to know if smaller daily doses are as effective as the carpet bombing approach advocated by this doctor. More study and more specific detail on how to administer the treatment is needed before we can form an opinion on ivermectin as a legitimate and effective treatment for early stage CV19. Many supposed effective treatments that have been announced are lacking the specific dosage and administration details needed to understand the treatment process.

When it comes to taking medication and dosages it is best not to guess. Maybe someday someone will know more about what this medical practice is doing

Like the Houston doctors who tried to report their findings on the success of Hydroxychloroquine these Dominican doctors will likely be dismissed by the first world nay sayers.
But no denying their results here to Dominicans
