Shalena gave a good explanation...in many instances it is exactly the way some people use sh!t in English (except when speaking literally) and other times is more like god damm!t or fukc.

- Pasame esa vaina - Pass me that sh!t (while pointing with your lips of course)
- Que vaina esta! or simply Que vaina! or the more emphatic Cono pero que vaina! - God Damm!t
- Cual es la vaina? - What the fukc? or What the fukc is your problem?
- Esa vaina no funciona - That sh!t doesn't work
- Tu tienes la vaina? No yo no tengo esa vaina - Do you have it? The sh!t? No I don't have that sh!t
- Deja de estar hablando vaina... - Stop talking sh!t man...
- Esa vaina si esta buena - That's some good sh!t
- Yo no le aguanto vaina a nadie - I don't take sh!t from nobody.
- Ese si priva en vaina - He thinks he's the sh!t

If you can understand this then you're aplatanao

Vaina is the scabbard for a sword, or sheath for string beans.
It has also been the male equivalent of "conyo".
Different generations may have different colorations to it.

Funny Spanish slang

Been fun reading this thread, I guess Dominican Spanish is hard to understand unless explained "off the books". How would anyone guess the grammar behind slang from the barrio? it seems that in the DR each year we get new words and terms, no kidding. Even I laugh at all weird words, like "chopo" :p and "hacer cocote" (which I write as kokote). Just the language alone can make anyone laugh, I guess this is a special country.

There`s a lot of free lists of DR slang words online:

"Que vaina! esta jente siguen hablando the la misma vaina" :)
