The Riu hotel complex in Maimon is operating. I lodged the dental and medical groups there in March. What did close was the smallest Riu hotel - the Riu Mambo. It is operated now during high season as an annex of the Riu Merengue. They have two Riu Merengues now...Merengue Garden and Merengue Village (I think).

It closes from September until the end of November each year, I think.

i stand corrected. thank you.

Why do you think Playa Dorado is on the upswing?

Short answer - Trends

A major rebuild going on for some beachfront condos in PD, another very large and pricey beachfront condo complex going up, other rebuilds being considered in PD, new cruise ship port nearby, 8 years of bad economy, a renewed interest in the NC tourism by the Dom gov't & increased advertising budget, development & Hotel planned for Sosua Beach, big new project at Playa Grande, etc, etc.

Big money is being invested, that does not happen unless stats and the money crunchers say there will be a payoff. One guy building a hotel doesn't mean that much, but if you look at everything happening between Maimon to Playa Grande - that's some big money. Just my take on it...

Before you ring the cash register think of this. The cruise people and the Puerto Plata governor did not make any mention or application to Mistry of culture or patrimony to remove the several wrecks at the mouth of the bay. No impact study done eaither. Word has it trouble is brewing for the port. Your dream of a cash fall may turn out to be bust. Whole project was approved by governor say so.
