The Dominican Congress has approved a bill that will legally declare missing persons from the devastating August 2023 explosion in San Cristóbal as deceased. The legislation, which passed unanimously in the Chamber of Deputies after receiving clearance from the Senate, now heads to the Executive Branch for final approval.

The bill aims to provide closure to families of the victims who have been unable to move forward with legal and financial matters due to the uncertain status of their loved ones.

The explosion, which killed 38 people, was caused by a fire at a plastics factory. Investigations have implicated the company Vidal Plast and its owners.

The legislation seeks to streamline legal processes for families who have been unable to access inheritances, pensions, or resolve property disputes due to the uncertain status of their missing loved ones.
