Right, if we buy something abroad and get it shipped here we dont pay tax if the price is less than 200$.
But what does exactly cover those 200?
Is it just the purchase price or does it include the shipping costs?

For example, purchase price is 180$
The sending to Miami is 30$
Then shipping is 20$
which altogether is 230$. Do we have to pay tax or not?

:)

Total amount on the bill will be taxed. So if S+H or any US sales tax appear on the bill increasing the amount over 200 USD you would have to pay tax on it.

I like Amazon Prime for this reason. Shipping is free on most anything.

Also, make sure that if you have an almost close to $200 item, and some other items, that the $200 item is packaged and shipped separately.

it is a service offered by amazon. i think the rate is 99 bucks a year. free shipping with on all "amazon prime" items (they will appear on screen with special logo, most items will be prime). 48 hour shipping. plus amazon video on demand and some other stuff.

Many items on Amazon has free shipping without prime. I haven't paid shipping in a long time, although I mostly buy books.

Ebay almost always has free shipping, and most of the same products that Amazon has at the same or a lessor price.

In my experience they aren't very consistent about applying the tax. On more than one occasion I've had things shipped to me that were more than $200 (but less than $300) and I wasn't charged anything.

These days Aduanas is being pretty diligent when clearing shipments arriving in the DR. They are not too happy about the < $200 tax exemption and at least in my experience are not letting much in that is priced over the threshold without assessing the tax. This is the DR so every now and then I'm sure they screw up and something slips by.

Amazon ships free to the DR too? That is a total game changer.. Is that door to door? I have no idea how they deliver when there are no house numbers..

Maybe I missed it but I don't see the DR as one of the countries Amazon ships to.
Doesn't matter. You just use a forwarder based in Miami like Vimenpaq/Transexpress etc.

Wait, directly and free to the DR? I very much doubt that... and if, trust in the delivery guys here? Well... and dealing with customs? Nah, I'll stick to Vimenpaq...

I have never been charged tax. Customs was diligent for a few months but that went away, just like everything goes away by time in the DR. It's in the Dominican genes. Just like a new store or chain opens: everybody goes on opening day and the first few weeks, then it dies out. The same applies for Dominican laws, regulations, initiatives, etc.

On select shipments, Amazon will ship directly. But the cost is usually double what a Vimenpaq, Aeropaq, EPS, CPS will charge. It has the advantage it is delivered directly to where the shipment is ordered.
