I think that's an option Johne, I just wouldn't advise it. Part A is free to us.
Gov't agencies of this type "Can be injurious to Your Health...mentally and physically". I wouldn't trust a gov. clerk sitting , picking her nose with 2 centavos

The standard part B premium right now is $175/mo. If you don't enroll now and want it later, you'll have to pay a 10% penalty for every year you didn't have it. So, if 10 years later you decide you want it, you'll pay 100% more(double) every month. It's not a one-time penalty. You really need to carefully think about it.
$175 a month is way more than I could afford anyhow.

@Jan

When you are ready to sign up, let me know. I live in Boca Chica and am in San Isidro about 4 days a week. I would be happy to stop by and help you navigate thru the govt websites or paperwork. I understand it can be daunting.
I need to get on the website this week and see. I got an email a few months ago about it but can't find it. I'll let you know. Thanks.

This is the first time for pages that the DR has been mentioned. As this thread seems to have become about American health insurance, those of us from other countries are excluded. I keep opening the thread to see if there is anything useful about DR insurance and wasting my time.

If you’re not an American collecting Social Security, this thread is meaningless. But if you are, or will be soon, and live in DR as most of the people posting do, it is vital information. Even younger Americans on Social Security Disability are entitled to Medicare after 2 years.

Not every thread is going to interest every member. Would you constantly open a thread about living in Santo Domingo if you live in Punta Cana? Same thing.

Seems like quite a few of the benefits require American residency.

Not really.. Not like Canada. You can collect SS pretty much anywhere and of course Meicare is ONLY good for US Doctors and Emergencies our of the US. But not really good for that either........

Real simple:Open a thread that pertains to your country of origin and how it affect your life in the DR. Stop whining. Be proactive. What is "wasting time" are posts like yours. Agreed ? Or, add to the OP about health insurance that is available to you and your needs. :):)

I was referring to the medical benefits. Canadians can collect their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension plan anywhere.
