just to show what lengths I will go to not to write the story that has gone cold or leave my ac office to walk to the pool and do laps..... here are some items from today's shop.. which show some current prices.. Ginnie used to do this for us and I always found it helpful.

And Racer,, you may be right.. but the DR does not grow apples so how would the apple juice be cheaper? and all the milk here is made with a portion of powdered milk.... but for the basics, eggs..chickens. bread... don't know.. I will post my next shopping basket.

Maybe it is the 26% on top of the bill that makes eating out such a drag.. even though I was used to tipping 20% tip on top a 6% tax so it was not so different (although I ususally tip over the 26%).. it is also that the food is just not that interesting.. the cooking is not that good,, except at Cappucinos.. which is the only place that I continue to go back to..(suggestions welcome.. particularly for ethnic food... Thai????? Indian???)

a. OK, I will agree the food isnt really creative UNLESS you are in a franchise place.
b. I posted wrong. The apple juice 1/2 gallon in the 'crap'permarket around the corner in NY here was 2/$3. c
c. Now, you right they dont grow apples but they do grow oranges and OJ isnt much cheaper. THAT was the reason I bought the apple juice.
d. Bread is 60pesos a loaf. That is what $1.55 or something right? CHeaper than the US but not particularly good either....I mean WHEAT bread.

I keep reading that utilities company overcharge in the DR,with that said,say you like to keep the ac running for the most part,average size apartment,maybe two or three units....what're we looking at monthly?don't know if it is farfetched but I was told of someone paying up to 37000$ rd for a house(electric).which might not be farfetched at all being that I just got hit with 429$us from the electrical company.I know it all depends on usage and that's why I stated the example aforementioned.thank you guys

But at least we don't have to pay for the "HEAT"!

Some states,as you know are cheaper than other when it comes to utilities.Is that the case?also I noticed washers are popular over there,but didn't see dryers at all

Some people have dryers, but they're the minority. I've seen both electric [yikes!] and gas dryers in stores.

Clothes dry very quickly outside there!

We have long wanted to visit DR and may get the chance in March 2012. We always stay in a time share and buy/cook our own food. We plan to stay in the Playa Dorada area. We would most appreciate information on the following:

Of the 3, which has the "best reputation"; Lifestyle Tropical Beach Resort & Spa , Lifestyle Crown Residence Suites, or Fun Tropicale Beach Resort ??

What agency has the best car rental prices AS WELL AS decent SMALL cars?

There are "must see" tourist areas? Where are they?

Now, please tell me of the GREAT "unknown" places that tourists don't normally visit....

What are the names of the best grocery stores in the Playa Dorada area?

What tax is attached to purchases in DR?

Finally (did you think this thread would EVER end?), please tell me the cost of:

3.8 l / 1 Gallon unleaded gasoline

1 loaf of bread

1 gallon drinking water (is the tap safe?)
