Omar, to be honest and I may be ignorant but you can be the life saver that a local Dominicana is searching, not searching praying for. This can make you a happy man for a long time. But even the "best" ones are somehow raised to be slick and that blows my mind. The minute they see you're pussy whipped or loose with your cash, you are thru and you'll have a whole village living off you.

This is where I'm gonna get laced into but from my observation of others:
You have to slightly be a bastard, emphasis on slightly, and not fall into the estranjero pendejo category. Challenge her and don't always praise her for every single fuking thing. ALWAYS value yourself more than you value her. Look at her and shake your head regularly when she says or does something offbeat. Cause a lot of these estrajero cats, loose it and make them feel more important than themselves. Anyways, you are grown, you know what I'm saying.

I can think of like 8 DR1 posters that fit this LOL!!! If these men wives told them to stop breathing there would be alot of dead expats in DR.

Sorry nine cjp2010 I do not know how I forgot this guy LOL

Whenever me and her get in the subject of her visa, I'll tell her why not just get out there and find a good man in your country. There has to be someone with the qualities you're looking for wanting a woman like you who doesn't live far away from you like I do. Her response is always the same; there aren't any. For that I'll stay by myself. I was alone before I met you, and if it's not you, I don't want anyone else. To which I'll always remind her that this long-distance situation will probably go on for a very long time. I'm not going to marry you just so you can come live with me. You have to get your visa on your own. To which she always either says yes I respect your position on that, or yes I'm working on it.

She's either better than me at lip service or a persistent hopeful.

You seemed a very observant type. Good work.

Here is a resource that I posted a while back. It may not be completely accurate (eg:not sure of the dates, sources), but at least it gives some ideas to start with.

Comparison with other cities (blank form):
Cost Of Living Comparison

Comparison (filled in) of NYC vs Santo Domingo
Cost Of Living Comparison Between New York, NY, United States And Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

And this is what that site has for select cities in the DR:

Santo Domingo
Santiago
Jarabacoa
Dominican Republic - Average

Hope it helps.
.

Comparing the cost of Dominican Republic to New York is not a lot of help since New York is one of the most expensive states in the United States.

Based on the expenses I incurred during my visit there back in March, I felt Santo Domingo is just as expensive as New York City.

For most people, what you do as a tourist / on vacation does not match how you would live every day life. If you don't live your whole life in the DR like a tourist then you should find SD to be much cheaper.

i do not think so. a decent place in SD would be probably twice the price as a decent place in POP. you use a lot more petrol to get from one place to the other than in POP with all the traffic jams in SD. services cost more (a decent hairdresser). restaurants are a bit more pricey. i could go on.

turista always spends more money because there is a hotel cost, car rental, going out (no home cooking) and so on. but SD is expensive as it is...

thesame as in other countries, for the same kind of lifestyle the mayor Cities7specially the Capital City, is more expensive than a good restaurant visit etc etc on the country side of the same country.
so to compare costs you need to compare for example Punta Cana to a California or Florida Beach front location, compare Santo Domingo to New York City, Bayaguana to Dubois/Wyoming, etc etc.

That's just it. I purposely planned and booked my trip with budget consciousness in mind. I stood in an apartahotel; which is not exactly a caba?a but it's not a Holiday Inn either.

The costs for lodging and car rental were relatively modest for me; it cost US$260 for the room and $359 for the car, for six days.

Most of the money went on food. I ate mostly at Pollos Victorina, McDonalds and a chinese restaurant nearby. Average meal was between US$4 ~ 7. And if it were only me that's still modest costs for food. But multiply that by four; me, my lady friend and her two kids; and well... you get the idea.

Is there a common Dominican equivalent to dollar stores? I notice one in Caberete catering to gringos that sells items in DOP between 40 and 80 including ITBIS. Are they common? The US version is often half the price for personal care items, cleaning products, kitchen items...vs. supermarkets or drugstores. Are they part of the retail landscape?

"OMAR, just lose the lady and her two kids, much lower cost vacation.
Remember, you can rent women by the hour here for VERY little DINERO.
Then go to a great restaurant alone.
Barring that scenario, find a "Chica" with no kids, YET!

LOL

I wanted something more meaningful with this woman. I can rent women in New York if I wanted to, and likely for much cheaper at that. :)

Unfortunately I did a lot of my research on immigration law in DR after paying for the trip. And well.... I'm still glad I went....

Maybe one day when we're both finished raising our children we'll meet in the US.... In the meantime, she can be a vacation girlfriend...

don't be shy, renting a steady vacation hooker, mostly with kittens, is absolutely usual for northern singles coming down south alone for extended stays of several weeks, it is usual buisiness.

$260.- US$ for the room at a aparthotel?
don't consider such cheap, talking 1K Greenbucks per month, that's even here in Punta Cana on the east a appartment right on the beachfront or a couple miles behind a real big House/Villa.
as an example, i live right on the beach, 2 bedrooms apartment, $600.- per month fully furnished.

as others mentioned in 100 posts before, it is very different if you "rent" something for a couple weeks or if you really rent, which starts usually for the good rates at 6 months minimum rent for a property/house/apartment etc.
your $620.- for just rent and a basic rental car for short 6 days =US$3.200.- greenbucks per month and still no food purchased or car fueled or chic taken out for dinner or disco etc etc, heck, that over 120.000.- pesos per month for nothing, with the same money, if needed to do, i could fee my family here in expensive punta cana the whole month, drive and fuel and maintain/repair my lil Truck, pay the Beachfront apartment rent, elec bill, internet, phones and the weekly sunday afternoon BBQ's and there could be money left, without cutting short on anything.

it is a very big difference to count costs for a short stay of just 6 days/a couple months without knowledge of the visited area, or to LIVE here and pay the usual/typical local costs for a living on any level whished for.
eating at McD's?, my dominican family would see that as a harsh downgrade on life quality.
