Got my first electric bill... No pool, no AC, an inverter with 4 batteries. I have power for about 16 hours a day. The only thing that really sucks the power is the well pump.

RD$11,000!

I just read your previous post regarding "expect to pay 15-20K per month".

IMHO, your bill just doesn't add up.

11,000 RD is $275 mas or minus.... (without AC or a pool pump running).

You're being screwed!

INVESTIGATE!

yes, DrSix is a perfect neighbour,
the Villas aside of our place is actually available for rent, expect 30K's elec bill per month without using the installed AC units, at the other 2 villas we will run them then of course day and night, hehe.
16hrs of electricity per day sucks, but yes, for many areas that's what it is. no AC's, just one punmp for "the well", so i guess you fill a Tinaco with that?
we have also a pump installed, it runs at the same moment you open the water somewhere, for the good and appreciated high water pressure, this pump is not a significant/mayor factor on the electricty bill.
you need a pro to check your connections to the power grid, or better, to check who else is connected to your power meter.
depending at which are you life, your described electricty use should cost somewhere between 2.ooo.- and 5.000.- pesos per month, with 5K a very high set figure in case you live in a expensive are where electricty is privately produced and sold for high KWhrs bucks, like Punta Cana for example.
but as you mentioned heavy daily power puts i guess you are on a simple public net and that sounds like the "public" in your neighbourhood uses your power meter as a Public meter.

Well CEPM (Bavaro) has just put their rate up (yet again) but it is a small rise from RD$14.68 per unit to RD$14.88 and of course you get no notice, which means it will probably do another leap or two later on this year. And for those of us who have renters, we get screwed as by the time we get the invoices it is too late to charge the renter... *sigh* Thankfully it is a small amount this time.. a blessing I suppose!

here in POP: no pool, no AC; all usual stuff plugged in; water heater on twice a day; 2 people household; one fan on most of the day and all night; 3.5 kw inversor with 8 batteries; about 10 hours blackouts every day. the bill is about 1700 pesos a month. yours is insane. well pump can't use that much power. don't you have a cistern or a tinaco for water storage, so that well pump does not turn on every time you open a tap?

The number of people living in your house counts a LOT!!!!!!
With 9 people, including the maid, who NEVER met a light switch she could EVER turn OFF, plus too many "A/C" units, I am always about 17 to 18,000 a month!

if you are a CEPM custo, mer as a company/renter/someone who "rents/sells out the recieved powers to tenants", then they will notify you as such well ahead of time about any changes, including raises on the bill, so you can adjust such on your bills to your customers.
if you are a private person renting out as a sidebusiness, then i would guess you just notify changes when the next bill is delivered under the door.

let them know that you have more than one unit and that other people have to pay for the bills, so that you need advance notice, you may get surprised how helpful they are if you let them know what you need.

I hear ya, i clearly and loudly hear ya.
but that is a completely different situation to the ones described above.
those folks do not have any large DR family and secretaries living at their place, heck, one guy does not even have any A/C to run, talking just singles and/or couples living somewhere on their own, without a pool, without A/C, without a pretty roommaid, no model styled ecretary, no 3 cu?adas, no nieces, no 2nd and 3rd fridge in da house plundered of all its chickens and beans stored there the day before etc etc.
CCCCCCCCCCCC,
for the ones who describe their living/housing situation above,
none should get more than 2.5-5K as a maximum of a electricty bill(and thats calculated on a max if you would live in a expensive electricity area like PC), considering they live in areas where they anyways have no power at all for 8-15 hrs every day/night.

Have you been watching MY house????????????
Wanna talk "Food Expenses", for my VERY "Extended "Familia"??????
I love it when the guys here, soon after marrying their "Novia", say that they will NEVER give a dime to help her family!!!!!!
My advice was, is and always will be,
When you marry a Dominicana, you get her whole family for "FREE"!
"Free" to her and her "Whole Family" that is!!!

that's the way it is, Yeeehhaaaaa.
firstly, as CCCCCC described as it is, you will have the expenses, if you are a ole fart already you will have that for a few years only may be, if you are a youngsetr who never got layed a good bride back home and get m,arried here in youyr 20? you will have it for the next 40 years at least, YOU pay for the family, that's the way it is and no modern Obamacare programs and tax pacts will ever change anything on that.
on the other side, as some already experienced, when you take care of the family(as you anyways have to) then in case of hard times they also will take care of you, a old principle since decades forgotten about back home, as it is more convenient to send the old folks to those prisons for old people where they get a couple meals per week and some tasty meds shots per day so they feel fine til the end of da soon coming day.
but to be part of the family circles you need to play the game right, otherwise you end up as 99% of the gringitos, coming over, leaving everything(they mostly anyways never had a thing there) back home behind, ****ing a good looking minor, give a **** about her family or prior produced kittens, and the day they fall down of a motoco?o or get soime serious health troubles which require someone to take care of them, that day they gonna die as deserved lonely in a public hospital on a bench on da floor there.
what it has to do with the Topic?
hey,
invest your spermas wisely and spend the coming electricity bills fair (without beeing a stupid golden goose), so when coming towards the end of time you will be taken care of appropiately, IF you raised your breed the right way.

The ONLY reason I remain here in the DR is BECAUSE of my family!!!!
My children here love all their family here, and their extended family as well, and receive their love in return!
I actually feel like the "Patron" when they come here.
Sitting in "MY CHAIR" watching 25 or 30 family members eating, laughing, playing "Bingo",dancing, drinking, and knowing that if it weren't for my love, and generacity, it could never take place.
Especially on Wed. Family Night Dinners!!!
If you ever get sick, and especially if you end up in the hospital here, you Will Not Be ALONE, EVER!!!!!
Some member. or members of that family will be with you 24/7!
Even sleeping beside you on the floor if necessary!!!
The "catch" is, you need to know when to say, "No"!, and when to say "SI'!
NEVER "Loan" tools, or money, that you ever expect to see again!
AND,lock up anything you want to KEEP!

What for????
I could live much better, much cheaper, with "Utilities" 24/7,and with a million less headaches, in the USA.
And my obsession for cheap "Dominicanas" has waned over the last 27 years!
It is "Funny" to live here watching all the Dominican "Tricks" everyday.
And, if I didn't actually live here, I wouldn't post about "Life In The DR" anymore.

Yup, been here three months and can hardly afford to live. The day my lease is up, I am buying 4 one way tickets back to the US. I will be able to say "I lived on an island for a year", that is good enough for me!

How were you trying to make an income here???
Or did you bring what you "Thought" would be enough money to live on??
And, most important, thanks for being a "Stand Up Guy" and telling us about economic reality here in "Paradise"!!!
Most of those who get smart and leave don't like to post about it.
They just disappear off DR1.
Don't forget to "Live Out" the last months of your lease, meaning don't pay until your deposit has been used.
You will never see any of that deposit anyway!!!
Might be a better idea to just go now!!!
Fewer headaches to suffer through!!!
Good Luck" Any where Else!

My income is not at all dependent on the DR. I make a good wage working offshore on an oil vessel. I assumed seeing as I made enough to live well in the US, I would be able to live at least as well, if not better in the DR. Not the case. Some of it certainly is our habits, i.e. driving every where all the time, buying food at La Sirena. The gas, the electric, the inflated rent, the staff... All adds up!

My plan was to start a business, cash in on the incoming Cruise Line in Maimon, and eventually stop having to travel for work. I'd like to be home to see my family more then 6 months out of the year. I was hoping I would succeed where others have failed because I have a job paying US wages, and would not be dependent on the business income, at least while it got going.

But, alas, there is just nothing left over at the end of the month, and land anywhere near Maimon starts at $1,000,000 a square centimeter.

I'll stay a year, live the island dream, maybe things will change. Luckily, I am only out a few plane tickets. We still have our house in the US, and I did not have to invest any money or use savings!
