$1,700 a month will get you a mansion in Haciendas El Choco, that is in general disrepair!

It's like a well kept women from the Hamptons. Good to look at, got all the right things in the right places, but once she moves in, costs you a fortune and leaves you longing for the simple life.

Interesting. I wonder what a $1,700 rent budget would reasonably get you in LT or Punta Cana these days?

The no frills 800 sq ft starter apt I have in Higuey is 6000 pesos a month. No hot water, electric is included, but only from 5:30 PM to 8AM. Nice and clean though and relatively quiet across from a school. Almost no motos after 9PM and no garbage on the streets.

Still helping the esposa in growing her business at about 2000 pesos a week, but she should be financially independent by the end of the next trip in January, which will be for three months. My daily costs are motos, batidas, cappuccinos, and the occasional Presidente grande~ maybe 2000 a week. We're both usually busy from 7AM to about 8PM with chores and working on her business. She puts in about 35 hours a week, and I put in about 25.

She and her sister do most of the cooking and food buying, but I get whole chicken carbon about once a week(300 pesos). Biggest costs now are paying for her parents's medical bills and helping the extended family. The mom has been in a clinic for a month and the dad has a diabetic ulcer on his shin from an infected wound.

Living alone, 4000 a week, rent included, would be doable, but not much fun.

just to add,
the same Motul Oil i get in 5 gallon cubes for 3.300.- pesos for 5 gallons/165.- pesos per quart.
but that's a special, in the shop where i buy regularly the 5 gallon cubes run for around 4.800.-/240.- per quart.

paid 140/lbs for a full tuna at the pescaderia in sosua, plus tipped 200 to have have it filet

they got you a nice deal for a small pescaderia which buys directly from the boats, If it was a real good Tuna, mostly a Yellowfin if you get good stuff.
if it was a Bonito or alikes(always sold as Tunas to the gringos) then you been focked with.
here we sell yellowfins from the boat for 100.- - 150.- per lbs, depends on the size and the quantities of overall fishes caught the last days. of course you get it cut and cleaned the way you wish, that's always included when purchasing from a boat directly or at the pescaderia.

Experience tell me, it's more likely I overpaid than having gotten a good deal (was in Charamicos down at the sea). Especially since i needed to google Bonito and won't likely even notice the difference (and of course I am a gringo).

Where is 'here' for you?

Chris,
"here" for me is on the southern tip of the eastshores, at Cap Cana and Cabeza de Toro, too far from you to make a fishie worth the travel costs, lol.
very most people couldn't tell a Bonito(and that's a mayor word, used for many many different "Tuna-styles", depending on location, too) from a good Tuna.
here around the Island, Bonitos hide the same high danger as the Barracudas, to be highly toxic.
just ona Barracuda you can tell by it's small size that it's too young to have the toxic already in it's flesh.
on a Bonito i couldn't guess on the age by it's size, unless it would be a very small baby.
a Tuna like a yellowfin is here a very valuable fish and costs it's price,
a Bonito is difficult to sell at all, even cheap.
next time, ask the seller what exact kind of "Tuna" the fish is, type that in your smartphone and take a look on the thousand photos popping up in google or look on a description on a page like Wikipedia and alikes.
it makes for a fun chat with the fishy sellers, when you show them a photo and it is the same fish, just don't start a fight in case you see that they had no clue or tried to scam ya, in such case just tell " maybe next time, buenas tardes".

If you accept a typical middle class lifestyle for much of the World, moderate house, no servants, no SUV DR costs are low - about $400 a month. On a $2000 income you have a choice a house full of servants, SUVs in the drive etc. or lead a more moderate lifestyle, give to charity etc. , travel the World on luxury cruises etc.

Big jump from $400 to $2000 ,so let us look at about US50,000 or $1000 per month which is about 45,000 pesos a month . On that amount you can live very comforatbly with a maid in the house, car in the garage , good security around the house and also have ample for petrol ,food and wine/beer . You may even stretch it to have a good cook in the house for a few hours. That is a comfortable life

haha....400 is only the rent for a small apartment in a not too good neighborhood.

With USD2000 you won't have a house full of servants, SUV and be able to travel. USD2,000 is just ok to pay your housing, supermarket and the gas for a 8 year old toyota corolla.

For everything you mention you're talking about USD5k per month minimum.

SORRY JEREMY, but you obviously have never lived here in the DR.
$400 US dollars does not equal a "Typical middle class lifestyle" in the DR
That's my monthly electric bill here .

Mauricio is in Santo Domingo. A whole different world there, can't be compared to POP as far as living costs.

Jeremy you are joking right, let me break it down for you, rent somewhere with normal western standards in a city you will pay around 1000 dollars for example in naco , electricity another 200, internet and television 75, insurances medical etc 125, gas 300, supermarket 300 and go on and on, and this is just for a 2 person household.

Dr is more expensive than europe or the states to live in , offcourse u can live for 400 dollars a month in a campo where there is only 5 hours electricity a day and living of salami and platano and drinking water and chlorin.

Please don't come to dr and think its cheap here u will be fooled if u want a cheap country to live in the dr is not the place to be for a foreigner
