You do know cost of living comparisons are relatively meaningless ?

I find it better to know ones budget $ XXX a month and know what basic expenses are in the Dominican Republic, it is a different system there, propane is or was common use there, bottled water- & tap water, electric, ( food, clothes separate because prices vary wildly) medical care & supplies, tools & hardware & utensils of all types.

I found it a better method to run My daily life as a business and have trusted people to assist Me in these things, people whose job it is to advise Me and get the best prices, My Dominican family finds Me My contacts and contracts business so I get the best deals.

Finally, someone who has real answers to complex problems.

I realize you're new on DR1, and I welcome you, but Friday is the day for JOKES.

You could just leave a can of Spam in the sun!

my Dog loves to throw herself into other dog's poooh and the smile on her face tells me that she love's it/tstes good for her, even that she knows that "Mommie" will bring her under the behated shower right away for that.
yes, tastes vary quiet hefty i guess.
hey, my chihuahua would agree with you that a dinner of salami from a solar oven is a tasty dinner, she really would eat that, at least i am almost sure she would.

That was not meant to be a wide sweeping or generalizing statement, (Post #875) I understand that you are firmly ENTRENCHED in all ways "Dominican"

We all know "YOUR" not being bent over on a daily basis, and I totally get the whole "foreigner local thing" it's been discussed many times.....

I wish Carlos....(Post #872) well, and maybe he's not a novice, and he's a pro like you, if that's the case, slap me around, apologies offered, if needed.....

By the way.....

Mike,
Are you inferring that Yapask's1 salami dinner tastes like pooh?:disappoin

Living costs are not rocket since.
One could live inexpensively in a simple house without A/C, flow through ventilation and a mosquito net.
Healthy food rice beans fruit/and veggies are inexpensive.
Use a bike and guaguas and the cost is way down.

If you want US standards it's better and cheaper in the US.
On $2000 US without a car a single or couple can live well enough.
All depends on your need for luxury and toys.

That depends on where in the US. In Chicago, you will not find a 1 bedroom in a decent neighborhood for under $1000. New York is higher than that. The US is much too large to make these kinds of generalizations.

Yes,
A nice Central Park condo in NYC will cost a little more.
Average cost for food, gas, clothing and shelter coupled with infrastructure and the potential for income make the US attractive.
Western standards cost a lot in the DR.
On $2000 US I can live well enough for my standards in the DR, but it's not the cheap tropical get away that some dream of.

oye arosito con habichuelacitas,
you still did not get my point not even in the basics,
sorry if my explanations in english(it is just my 3rd language and i know that i have many defects on it's typing and talking and spelling etc) did not come over as i meant them to come/be,
but exactly for the NOVICE/the foreigner as a NEWBIE here/NEW on the iusland, exactly for that foreigner the same language speaking expatrs/other foreigners in the area of the new country are the Most Dangerous Guys to be around with, todays no foreigner could fool me, as i am not a newbie anymore, but back in the day when i was a unexperienced novice on the island the ones who took advantage of my "virginity" and cluelessness, those ones been exclusively english and german speaking expats/foreigners, not even one single dominican.
and as i observe such stuff still to happen , on weekly bases minimum, i know that nothing changed.
a newbie does have to be afraid of the same language speaking "helpful" "good hearted" people of the same nationality/same language speakers/same religion "believers", they are the first Enemy to face and knock down on new foreign soil.
from there on it is going upwards and towards real learning.

and for exactly that to not happen a bord as DR1 is perfect, as here many such foreigners give advise, by their own experience, so a single fraudulent nuthead between the lines is not worth not even crap, as there would be many expressions against that false guys "opinion", that way todays in the modern times of cyberspace a newbie can sort the things out and safe the prior usual negative experiences of paying a big learning fee first before the lessons are learned.

I was just wondering what would the minimum wage be for a live in be? Duties including feeding 2 dogs, light gardening and light house work. The main purpose of the employee is to watch over the house as I'm in and out of the country.

dogs like my Lucy, a 1 1/2 lbs Chihuahua1, can be fed with 100 pesos per month wehn you by the expensive Chihuahua Food. i can't comment on the costs of feeding 2 Rotties or Dobermans with Food purchased at the Vets place, as i let mine always chase their own fresh bloody food on the surrounding neighbours grounds. not to safe costs on food, but it keeps the hot and the neighbourhood for a very wide area stays away from the house from dusk til dawn, as the word goes around.
costs for housekeepers who live in the house while you are out of the country, to do such i would recommend that you get some longer time in the country first, to find the people you would trust your property to while you are a couple thousand miles away. there's no problem to find such people, but as everywhere you would not leave such job to someone you just met a couple weeks ago, so a more extended time here is necessary to finally make such good friends or find such trustworthy employees.
a housekeeper, when living in your house including taking all meals in your house to take care about all the small stuff around the house including gardening can easily be found for 6.000.- -max 10.000.- pesos per month. and that's a high set of a salary, for a person really trustworthy and taking care about the place, doing the usual in a house upcoming small repairs and taking good appropriate care about the garden.

Thanks Mike,

I do have a guy in mind I've known him for a few years he seams trust worthy. So I guess that a $100 USD s very low for a monthly salary. I would be covering all the house hold bills including the food for the dogs. I was wondering if there was a web site where I could find more information in regards to my rights as the employer and the rights of my employee. Its just a little nerve racking leaving the house for periods of time to go back home.
