Long weekend in DR

Where in the DR would you recommend to go for a long weekend in February or March (leave NY on Thursday, return Monday or Tuesday)? I'm looking for relaxation, a nice beach and accommodations under $80/night. I have a free plane ticket that can be used for either Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata. Would it be too time consuming to travel to Samana, or should I stick to a beach closer to Puerto Plata? Any hotel recommendations?

Samana is about 4 hours from Cabarete. I can offer you a house for less than 80$/night. Email for further infor.

I recommend going to Sosua and stay at the hotel Europa.
From there you can go to either Cabarette or Puerto Plata for
day trips. The Sosua beach is great, also the Cabarette beach
as well. If you stay for 3 nights at the Europa you get $28/nite.. Pool, AC, cable, room safes, etc..

Cabrete to Saman?...4 hours??? By what, windsurfing? If you can?t do Puerto Plata Airport - Saman? in 3 hours, then please pull over.

Saman? is the most beautiful area in the country, especially Las Galeras...Playa Rinc?n...El Lim?n. If you want to sit on a beach in Sosua and look at a bunch of drunken, tatooed tourists, then please book there.

Travel Girl,

JJ is right about 3 hours to Samana, absolutely the prettiest part of the DR. You can have a car waiting at the car rental agencys at POP or Sto Dgo airports. Down side, Sto Dgo is 5 hours or more from Samana. POP best.

It's even faster if you fly a charter to Samana from POP or Sto Dgo, about 30 minutes. The down side is you need two others to share the cost of the plane, then its about $50 each.

Depending on arrival time

I'd certainly take up on Andy's idea. It is spectacular out there, and the drive is not too tiresome.

Otherwise I think I'd just book into one of the all-inclusives at Playa Dorada..you are on a beach, no hassel, no problems, its all done for you.

Sosua is a little hectic. Cabarete is cool and offers a good value for the weekend.

The real problem with Samana is that if you go there, you might stretch that weekend into a month or so...

All the above advice is good. However, if you just have 3 days, Sosua is your best bet. The nicest beach on the north coast (if not the island) close to everything, discos, restaurants, great bars. Forget the "Prisons with golden gates" Playa Dorada is go to be the worst decision you could make. Sosua has everything you want for a 3 days vacation. But, I'm sure you'll be comming back. Then take the time to visit Samana, Cabarete etc. Check out our site. Whatever you decide, have a nice vacation.

Hi Travel Girl,
Samana and Las Terranas are gorgeous but if I only had three days I would not go there. Save it for a longer trip. Like Hillbilly said, you'll want more time there!
I would suggest Cabarete. The beach is wonderful, you can sit with all the people and the action or walk a short distance and be alone and quiet. You cannot do that in Sosua. The beach is gorgeous but small and full of people ALL THE TIME! Cabarete has reasonable accomodation and the night life and restaurants are very good.
Wherever you decide, I am sure you will love it. A wonderful place to vacation!! Enjoy!
