There are many ways of living your life. Married or single. And many variations in between. Either way it’s healthy to have close relationships. For mental health.

I suspect Abinader and Raquel have struck a good balance between their public and private lives. They probably had long discussions about him entering politics . Not every lady wants to take on the First Lady role. It’s not easy supporting your partner and being in the public eye while ducking and dodging the daily media gossip. With her support, Abinader has punched almost four hard years and hasn’t been tainted with corruption while members of his party were and he came down hard on them with his anti corruption platform.

They were wealthy before entering politics so they’re not in politics for the money. He was elected because he was a clean face in a corrupt sea of politicians. I hope they get another four years to continue and build on their good work. I would like to see her take a leadership role to improve the dysfunctional DR educational system.

What they have together appears to be working well. If that allows them to leave a good political legacy, then good on them.

There is nothing that says we need to have close relationships. There is, however, plenty of studies and research around the correlation between social interaction, isolation and dementia. Happiness is, as always, an inside job. And that's very freeing. It means, in the bare sense, that you don't need to change for me to me OK. (not you or me specifically BTW, just in general)

I have been married for almost 31 years. Marriage is not easy, it takes work, understanding and some give and take. Add that to being married to someone from the DR (or any other country), understanding the culture and differences, it is not always perfect. I congratulate all couples who stay together for the good and bad times.

Congrats, my parents were married for 63+ years. It's most definitely doable.
