Have you tried to translate it yourself? That's how I started to learn Spanish by translating things. Once you start learning --- especially with Spanish (love) songs-- the same words repeat themselves--over and over and over again.

Yeah, I agree with 2LeftFeet. I attribute learning Spanish to listening to lots and lots of bachata, jaja. It helps so much, especially when songs are repetitive, like merengues for example. It also really helps you learn how things are supposed to be said.

Song lyrics & Song titles = Great supplementary language learning method

I am also in favor of song lyrics for language learning at all stages in the process. They definitely help one to expand his/her vocabulary, learn correct phraseology, idioms, proverbs and colloquialisms. From a grammatical perspective it helps with your usage of verbs especially the imperative forms and usage of the subjunctive. Music lyrics are extremely diverse and as one gets more comfortable with the language without a doubt you will recognize and benefit from the diversity. Depending on the author of the lyrics of any song, the verses can get somewhat complicated and tell a deep story with plenty of symbolism. However, this is not to discourage anyone who is using song lyrics for language learning. As well, song writers take the liberty to break grammatical rules to accommodate the song, therefore as you expand and strengthen your knowledge of Spanish grammar, you will notice sometimes very obvious or very subtle grammatical flaws.

I also suggest not only reviewing the lyrics but also the song titles of an album. The titles are short phrases, thus another way to learn how a phrase is said in Spanish. Out of the genres I listen to, the titles are diverse and I enjoy the ones that are colloquialisms and slang because they force me to think of the meaning if I am not familiar with the expression. I normally understand from the usage in the phrase or immediately when I hear the song. However, some are too colloquial and the lyrics don't always clarify the meaning.

In fact, I was in the music store yesterday browsing at some cds. The titles reminded me to mention this point in the thread. One song title was Tumbao pa' changuito. It caught my attention right away. Look at it carefully. For those learning you will need to understand who "chang?" is and not be thrown off by that title.

In summary, song titles as well as lyrics are great for language learning. Lyrics of baladas and boleros are usually the easiest of the genres in terms of coherency IMO .

The important aspect is to understand the gist of the lyrics and not to translate. Once you research any unknown vocabulary try to understand the gist of the phrases. Treat it like a poem.

In a song from Shakira "D?nde est?n los ladrones" we can learn the "perfecto de indicativo". She sings "los han visto por ahi, los han visto en los tejados, los han visto de rodillas" and learning the Past and Present Participle like in this song also from Shakira: "Sombra de ti" she sings..me sigue rodeando (present participle) la sombra de ti y siguen rodando (past Participle) por ahi todas las palabras que dijimos (preterit) y los besos que nos dimos(preterit) como siempre.... This is so much fun learnig this way....

You said it. Song lyrics can definitely make language learning fun and I can see that you are focused on the grammar usage etc. That?s the way to do it. Study the grammar of the language then look for examples of its application. This is what I like to see. Make the sacrifice to learn the grammar and you will be successful. Yes, it will take longer than those who opt for street Spanish or feel they can get by after a few lessons and conversing with others but there is huge difference in the quality of their Spanish.

Regarding past and present participles it may just be a typo what you wrote however, sigue rodando is a present participle not a past because of the verb seguir. Seguir + present participle is a normal construction in Spanish for example- sigo dici?ndote lo mismo, sigo cantando, me sigues rogando etc.

I am not a fan of Shakira?s music. I could not tell you anything about it however, I browsed at the lyrics of the two songs you mentioned and I think they can be used for learning. The grammar is good. If you like tropical music especially salsa, I recommend Marc Anthony?s music. The lyrics of his songs would be perfect for language learning and not only that you get to listen to good salsa at the same time. A good example is his latest hit Vali? la pena.

I am not sure if you were expecting a response or not. However, I found a website that I think can be very helpful to those who choose this method of learning for Spanish. I just wanted to go through it first before posting the link.

Here is the page that provides and explanation of the present progressive tense in Spanish and the verbs that are associated with its usage. You will note the example with seguir.

As well, on the left hand side click on "all lessons" then click on "quick index" you will see a list of all the grammar topics listed. This is a good site. One of the few I think that can really be a complementary language link.

Since you mentioned the past participle it is used with the compound tenses or as an adjective. The verbs forms vary according to the verb group.

-ar verbs? ado ej. hablado, cambiado, pensado
-er verbs- ido ej. comido, bebido, vencido
-ir verbs- ido ej. venido, salido, partido

There is a small percentage of verbs that have irregular past participles or two forms and those have to learned by memory and exposure. Refer to the link for more details.

Keep enjoying song lyrics because they are a good learning tool but just beware that there are grammatical flaws as I mentioned before. As beautiful as the chorus is of Vali? la pena there is an error. Las horas y la vida de tu lado nena definitely should be a tu lado.

Vali? la pena is a Marc Anthony classic IMO. In general terms his salsa is tremendous and he has an outstanding repertoire. It?s really hard to say which is his best song but I have a few favorites. All his salsa albums are good especially Contra la corriente but I believe people forget how beautiful Libre is too. I listen to that album a lot because he experimented with different tropical rhythms mixed with salsa. Listen to De qu? depende, you will see what I mean.

I do a lot of online shopping because guaranteed I will get what I want but in Montreal I go to Video Latino on B?langer @ St.Denis. Believe it or not HMV on Rue Ste. Catherine has a very impressive Latin selection and good prices too. I was just there last weekend browsing.
