A major fire destroyed the installations of the Colchonería La Reina mattress factory in the industrial district of La Fe. The factory is located at Calle Pedro Livio Cedeño corner Av. Ortega y Gasset. The fire broke out at around 2:30am on Wednesday, 9 June 2021. The intense flames caused the collapse of a large area of the roof of the factory. Two dozen firefighting units tackled the flames putting these out by noon. The reasons for the fire are under investigation.

One of the ladder trucks used to fight the fire was donated to the Santo Domingo Bomberos by Firefighters Without Borders, Canada. This is international assistance with no strings attached. Firefighters are giving to firefighters. Thank you!

One of the firefighters was Ricardo Koening, who has been a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years and is the owner Colchones la Reina, the mattress factory that burned down.
A well-known citizen of Santo Domingo and known as well for his humbleness and dedication to helping others.
