I thought I'd let you know that I found an apartment for my stay. Thank you for your help :)

I looked at possibly renting an apartment on the malecon, but one day visiting there was this god awful smell and the ocean breeze made it worse. I later saw what look like garbage canals emptying out waste onto the beach. I had to continue thru the malecon with the windows closed.

Well done! You have to be my sort of expat - just a little bit of help and you get it done. No dependency, no daft questions. Splendid! Wish they were all like you ;). Have a great time when you're here :).

haha thanks. I did have help. Someone saw my message on here and let me know that they would be renting an apartment on the malecon for a few months and helped me to secure an apartment for myself without getting ripped off!... So I definitely didn't do it alone, but it's good experience for when I get the chance to move to Puerto Plata for a year or two :)

reading through the thread, I see that apts are available for 6000 rd/month!! yay! I'd appreciate any contact info of the renters. anyone out there (perhaps you lambada or tink23) can send me a number I can call to solidify a rental for july and aug 2009.

thanks

Ocean front on the Malecon in POP with an Ocean View , comes at a premium, try $600 U.S per month not $RD 6000, try the back streets.

1 street up from the malecon you can rent a studio for $250 US or a 1 bedroom for $500.

They are by the corner at Super Economico Max and come with hot water, cable, laundry and daily maid service. Wifi available in some rooms.

Studios aren't anything special but have everything you need.
1 Bedrooms have been recently updated and are much nicer.

I stayed here for 2 months and it was easy to get around, decent price and safe (as long as you dont leave your laptop in arms reach of the open window ;) )!!

I would stay here again if I needed a place.

Yep, just what Sangria said. I stayed in the same apartments as her and found it to be a decent place.
I stayed in the studio which was quite small but it had everything I needed. The apartments were very nice but double the price.
I may be returning for an extended time and if I do I will most likely rent from here again.

apts for rent in Pto Pla

Give thanks for all the responses. I should have been more clear with regards to apts.....not especially seeking a malecon front apt....simply seeking an apt (either bachelor or 1 bedroom) in pto pla for approx 6000 rd/month, hot water not needed, however furnishings - bed, fridge and gas burner for sure. sangria, thx..I do know of super economic max, and have been inside a one bedroom there still....as you said it was quite decent accomodations.....

lambada, is the number for Jardin Suiza on pg 2 still in service...called it, but no responce???

peace

That's the number I have. Did you remember to use the prefix 809? No idea if it is still in service - if we want to talk to Jaime we pop down & see him. The apartments there that I knew of (the newer ones) were around RD$10,000-12,000 a month so maybe Alexwo1 had one of the older ones?

On the Malecon not far from La Sirena. Approx half way between the Casino and the Puntilla. Coming from the Long Beach end of the Malecon, if you get to the Bomberos, you've gone too far. Should you require exact geographical co-ordinates you'll have to wait until I get my theodolite out :).

sorry if i was confusing....the apartments i was referring to are close to the corner of super economico max but not above the store.

they are on the opposite corner and 2 doors down

there is a sign out front advertising tourist apartments and all that is included.

the name is don juan habitaciones and he has 12 units (2 floors).

owners name is Juan

Sangria,

Do you have a # for Juan? I am looking for an apt for July. (3 weeks)

This sounds good to me.
