I need to buy 10 cast iron manholes covers (with collars).
Can anyone help?
Does anybody know of a manufacturer or a supplier?
The amount of these that get stolen and then replaced leads me to believe there is someone in the D.R. doing brisk business selling/replacing these items.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I understand they are starting to use plastic ones believe it or not. - which may work out good for you. You could probably call any of the ayuntamientos in any of the bigger cities to find out. Other than that you would probably need to call a local foundry.

Get the heavy duty Plastic ones mentioned by Chip otherwise they will be stolen again within a week or two. There are hundreds of Iron manhole covers & iron storm drain covers missing in the Puerto Plata region & I am sure we are not the only area to be so treated by thieves.

If you see anyone in your area who has recently acquired rippling muscles :pirate::pirate: you might want to point him out to the police as a possible suspect!:cheeky:! ~ Grahame.

Maybe, but it could just as well be.... dare I say it... ah, what the hell... it could very well be Haitians.

I know what many of you are thinking, but hey, I didn't made this up:

Apresan una banda robaba paneles solares

Or this:

Hallan en Hait? veh?culos y animales robados en Rep?blica Dominicana

Now, I'm not saying it is them, but it could be. Afterall, manholes were disappearing in Port-au-Prince years before they ever began the hide-and-seek game in Santo Domingo.

Absolutely NALs ............. it could be Haitians.

It could also be North Americans, Europeans, South Americans, Chinese ............................... ANYONE who has the contacts to make sure this stuff is melted down & then shipped abroad (might in fact rule OUT the Haitians!!).

PLEASE, stop with the Haitian bashing innuendos & concentrate on the subject to hand ...:tired:..:paranoid:.. Manhole covers.

If there is NO company in the DR aleady making the heavy duty PLASTIC type, maybe DonMobay might be persuaded into setting up some such factory!! ;) (sorry DonM, bamboo won't work due to weight constrictions!!)

Celt,
Come off it my friend - how many policemen do you see with rippling muscles or are prepared to lift anything heavier than a bottle of Presidente/Ron?:cheeky: :pirate: :surprised? ~ Grahame.

There have been quite a few newspaper reports by, as yet, non-deported journalists, about those arrested for this crime - they appear to be Dominicans with Chinese connections. It would appear the manhole covers go from here to China to meet the huge market for metals there...

The plastic ones being used in SD are manufactured in Mexico - scroll down to 'Plastic manhole covers'.

give it a rest Nals....

Nals,
curiously - possibly ironically - but certainly comically...
These manhole covers are destined for the roads of Port au Prince, where they will rest, happily, until they are serviced.
I haven't had one stolen yet - I will keep you updated and let you know when the nasty, evil, dirt-eating, starving, civil-war - torn, uneducated, baby-eating Haitians get round to stealing one!

Or perhaps they are all busy in S.D. stealing yours??

But they would have to go Conn. to get Nals. He is not in SD Try hartford.

think the first artical he posted said they broke up a gang of Haitians and Dominicans.

Whatever you say, sir.

Lately there is another interesting ingredient: an alarming number of manhole covers are missing. I wonder what happens to them? Do people actually steal them? Do they steal them to sell them? And if so, who buys them? And after they buy them, who do they sell them to? The Department of Streets? Who else needs them? It is possible to buy a TV set at a very cheap price and rationalize that maybe it is not really stolen, but manhole covers?

Haiti Trips (1998)

That was a decade ago. At that same time, theft of manhole covers was negligible in the DR.

What's next? The denial of the theft of solar panels in the DR that are later resold to exporters in Haiti?

Ha ha...
