With the cruise ships, IMO there are 3 types of cruisers...those who stay on the ship in port, those who want to do water/beach activities, and those who want to see the culture. For SD water/beach activities would be difficult unless maybe going to Juan Dolio. There may be enough culture as Nan pointed out with museums, ZC, etc... But overall, I have never thought of SD as a "tourist spot". Business, stopover spot, yes, tourist not really.

They could see the traffic jams, get stuck in them, and miss their departure times. That would make for an unforgettable visit to Santo Domingo.

Yeah, when you come to the DR for the beach, SD has nothing to offer for you. But when you interested in history and culture, SD has a lot to show. There is way more then Plaza Colon and the Conde, when you'll explore all the historical places in the ZC you need 3 days or more to visit all. And after dark it's really a magical place with so many options for dinner and have a good time. The only problem now it's too dificult to find a parking lot, even when you go at midday, better come with uber/taxi.

You do not like SD and that is why you think the whole city is bad. Have you been to the ZC? Other than going to SD for "business" have you ever spent time doing other things in SD? There are very nice areas of SD, a lot to do. SD is not for everyone, but it is nowhere as bad as you make it to be. I have a list of things I dislike about SD, but I also have a list of things I really like. Would I call the ZC a "magical" place, no not really but I would say it is a nice place to spend some time. I agree with you about cruise ship passengers having a difficult time navigating SD (traffic etc..) and the possibility of not making it back to the cruise ship in time for departure. In SD you kind of need to plan your outings around traffic.

I guess most cruise ships arrive in the morning and leave at night. Offer a bustour to ZC, Faro de Colon and Los tres Ojos and they will have a bit of everything except the beach.

I have been seeveral times to ZC. I don't find it to be especially special.

Yes. Many times visiting friends and family that live there. Usually at the same time I had business, a dual use visit so as to minimize my time there to as little as possible.

Of course there are "nice places" in Santo Domingo. I have also seen a couple of those nice places. They are in no way enough for me to like going there. Not even close. For me personally, it is at least as bad as I make it out to be.

If you go to SD on Sunday you will enjoy the visit. Zero traffic and some really good restaurants. Any other day it is a nightmare..........

Thanks, but no thanks. I will fly to the USA instead for such things.

The only thing that comes to mind that might ever bring me back to Santo Trafficjam is if I care to renew my Dominican passport.
I understand they don't trust the offices in places like Puerto Plata to renew the passports of naturalized DR citizens. And so it goes.

I guarantee your passport now will take at least 3 trips if your lucky. And not only to Migracion but other places. Real nightmare. You don't really need it anyway. And having an expired one still means you are a citizen..................Cedula and US one works fine in and out of here............

My goal was always to live close, but not in, Santo Domingo. I definitely succeeded in doing just that.

It's great being within minutes of the center of the city, but you couldn't pay me to live there.

Yeah right ! A Cruise Ship full of "Indiana Jones" interested in culture and historic sites of SD. And they will be picked up on the Port with Unicorns.

If you've ever watched the water off the malecon during a storm, you'll understand why this will never happen.
