Any Experience with the Now-Open Santiago Marriott Courtyard?

The Marriott Courtyard in Santiago is open for business. While I assume that as part of a large corporate chain the room and amenity standards will be consistent with the brand, I would still like to hear from anyone who has stayed there or has even just seen the facility.

How do the rooms compare, especially space-wise, with places like the Platino and Aloha Sol? And how convenient / inconvenient is the location as compared with the Platino? The address is listed as Autopista Duarte Km 9. To get there from the airport you turn left on to airport road (0.5 miles) and then turn right on to highway Duarte (1 mile).

Thanks for the help.

The Courtyard in Santiago is as nice (if not a tad bit nicer) than the Courtyard in the SDQ....except it is not right next to the U.S. consulate/embassy. Rooms are larger in STI than SDQ. Nice breakfast. Price at 119-129 (without the tax) causes this hotel to stand "somewhat empty" at the moment.

Gran Almirante, STI ($119-159) has a nice restaurant (with others close by) and a casino and other activities to keep a traveller "entertained" a bit. The Courtyard has none of that amenity action.

I really believe the courtyard in STI would be full at the 70 dollar price range. I believe its going to have a tough time selling out unless it gets all the airline contracts.

Best, dms

I particular would not like the location, since its not close to anything but the airport, ideal for the pilot or stewardess bunking down for the night until the a.m. flight. Went passed there two weeks ago, it looked deserted, maybe it wasn't officially opened yet.

Ricardo and dms,

Thanks. I actually may wind up staying at the Marriott as I can utilize frequent points for a free stay. That would certainly outweigh the disadvantage associated with a less than optimal location.

Do either of you know whether the Marriott would be a guest-friendly hotel? My assumption is that with 138 rooms they wouldn't care much or keep close tabs on any individual guest. Plus with the hotel at low capacity you would think that they would go out of their way to generate good word of mouth by accommodating their guests. Do you concur or am I wrong about this?

You are soooo right!!! This hotel is close only to the airport. It appeals to people FAs and pilots bunking for the early morning flight. Or - those people coming in late at night who are going to other parts of the island and can't catch a bus late at night. Even then I think a cabana would be cheaper.

"Guest friendly" in SDQ.....

...have no clue on the STI location. As I understand it from AZB (hahaha) the SDQ location allows "guests" as long as they have cedulas and leave them at the front desk and then security keeps tabs on the situation.....

Does anyone know how far this hotel is from the action in & goings on in Santiago and how much it costs (taxi or publico bus) to Ahi Bar/Monument..Etx? My friend works at the Marriott so I can get the $39 and with it being brand new and it offering alot of amenities at the price I would like to pay I could stay there for a night no problem. If anyone knows more informaion please share it with the fellow DR1's. Thanks!

It's probably about a 15 minute ride to downtown Santiago from there. The going rate for travel within the city in a taxi is $100 RD. Although I think that going from there the fare would be more since you are far out from the city center. For taxi services I recommend Emi Taxi. I'm sure if you called them, they could quote you a fare.

Thanks Frank...Since I will be riding Caribe tours to POP the next morning would it be a better bet to stay inside the city at Aloha Del Sol so I can connect to the bus easier? I just love the amenities at the Marriott and for $39 cant beat it, but I figure to be out and about anyway. I'm just staying for a night (I'm arriving from JFK at 10:45am on Friday)... any suggestions?

Seeing is believing...knowing how the DR works I really wonder if that $39 rate will hold. I would gamble it doesnt....anyway I went to breakfast there once, and it was a so so buffet at best....hard as nails tastless bacon..if I remember right...cost me about $1200 pesos for 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pretty steep Id think....cant see how staying there would be less than $80-$100 a night.

I saw a few Marriot vehicles...they may have a shuttle service...although It might just be to the airport. who knows...they look like they could easily make your arraingments to connect to the bus station.

Frank: 15 minutes!!!!!!!! dammmm you drive slow...on route 1 it should be a lot faster than 15 minutes....

drive like you have Brugal for blood ha ha ha

Thanks for the info Bob,

Me and my buddy have stayed at the Jaragua Marriott twice b4 and since he's a marriott employee it was $69 per night there for the tower room. Also we've stayed at numerous Marriott properties across Latin America and the emp rates "stuck". That's the least of my concerns :). I'm aware of the hotel shuttle service to and from the airport(sure would be lovely If those "Marriot Vehicles" could shuttle me to and from the sites in town :p).

This is a question for my foot to the pedal/"fast & furious" drivers... How long does it really take to get to Ahi Bar, The Monument and other such popular locales from this hotel(without killing ourselves)? And for the $39 is it worth it for us to be out of the town but to enjoy some of the amenities and comfort they have onsite at the Marriott compared to other hotels such as Plantino and Aloha Del Sol?

I have only visited Santiago once and it was a quick turnaround trip to see a chick at night and I came right back to Santo Domingo in there morning so I'm not too familiar with the lay of the land.

Rdennis, I really cant speak for the quality of those two other hotels. Id doubt they would come close to the ammenities for the price of your marriot deal. As for location...you wont miss much it really isnt that far from down town..a cab ride....and there are plenty to take you....you dont want to walk everyplace in santiago anyway...so you take a cab for 3 minutes or 13 minutes...not much difference....you might want to ask about if you would get interferance from the desk clerk if you brough back a room companion......

honestly to the monument if traffic is light about 10 mins, ahibar is 2 blocks from the monument so it should not be more than 2 minutes from there, but beware santiago at rush hour can get bad with all the conchos and what not running around.
