Masonry, Trujillo, etc.

Greetings to all.

I just joined the DR1 Forums when I realized this thread was going on. As Master of Mount Moria Lodge AF&AM, I will ask the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of the Dominican Republic for permission to search their archives for documentation that will validate Mirador's assertion that Trujillo was a Mason, something I very much doubt. I have been a Mason since 1992 and my level of participation in the local organization is extremely active. I am a member of three symbolic lodges: Cuna de Am?rica No. 2, Caballeros de Memphis No. 50, and Mount Moria Lodge under Dispensation. Also I hold the 43rd Degree in the Ancient and Primitive Rite and the 4th Degree of the York Rite. I hope these credentials will suffice to let members of this thread know that, had Trujillo been a Mason, it would have come up in conversation at least once over the past 12 years--something that has not yet happened.

Also, I truly appreciate Scandall's comments and completely agree with him when he says that "It is true that there are probably different Masonic cultures around the world , but I have been active in the DR for a year now and have met nothing but gentlemen and great, extremely humble people."

It is also important to point out that "regular" masonry is limited to Lodges that appear on the "List of Lodges Masonic". Any Dominican lodge not appearing on that list does not have official international recognition as practicing "regular" Freemasonry.

Other Dominican Freemasons

capodominicano said:
Anymore masons on DR1 who would like to share there experience? Any other famous Dominican freemason? I already knew about Duarte but Trujillo is new to me, it doesn't seem like Trujillo, masons have different rules and morals.
At first I became interested because of all the bs hype around them, now am interested in Freemasonary because of their values; faith, charity, brotherhood and leadership. Also I found it quite weird that all the founding fathers in the USA were Freemasons, DR founding fathers (JPD & others) were also Freemasons, and numerous other countries founding fathers.

Capo

All but one of the nine members of La Trinitaria were Freemasons, actually, it worked as a secret lodge. Other important Dominican Freemasons were Emilio Prud'homme and Jose Reyes, the author and composer of the Dominican National Anthem, as well as several restoration heroes such as Gregorio Luper?n. So were M?ximo G?mez and Eugenio Mar?a de Hostos (the latter was Puerto Rican but lived here and made great contributions to the educational system).

You will find others in Latin America: Simon Bolivar, General San Martin, Jose Mart?, Benito Juarez. 19th century Freemasons were instrumental in establishing the free nationas throughout the New World.

Wow, very interesting savinon. And welcome to DR1. Stick around.

All,

This is an interesting discussion. Special thanks to our latest member (Miguel Savinon, who I know and can vouch for) who said that he will look into the archives and do some research on some of the questions that have arisen.

For those who have ever wondered who actually was or wasn't a Mason, I have a small PDF file that is pretty thorough. Email me directly and I'll send it to you.

It is very honest and the most complete list that I have come across. It includes: famous masons, infamous masons, and our "Black Sheep". It is an interesting read.

email me directly at randallhmiller@gmail.com and I'll shoot it off to you.

Lodges or Brothers in Santiago

I am a PM from a lodge in NJ, USA and another Brother and I will be visiting Santiago on March 5-8, 2008. I doubt time will permit a lodge meeting; though if possible I would go. But I certainly would love to visit any lodge in the area. Do any of you know if there are any lodges? I have been to the GL building in Santo Domingo and the Brothers there were very welcoming.

If you get to Puerto Plata the Lodge is at the Malecon end of Separacion right opposite sea front. I don't know anything about masonry but the building is historic & impressive & when I once enquired about bringing a gringo fellow member along to introduce they were very friendly.

Great thread!

I have never read anything about Trujillo being a Freemason. I was would really surprised if had been one. One of El Jefe's closest allies was Francisco Franco.

Franco, the Spanish dictator, persecuted Freemasons. He outlawed the group in 1940 and made being a Freemason a crime-captured members could expect to spend several years in one of Franco's brutal prisons. Franco actively hunted them down and had a hatred of Freemasons that "bordered on the obsessive". Freemason organizations actively worked against his regime. I cannot imagine that Trujillo was a member of a group that Franco hated so openly.

Franco was also Godfather to one of Trujillo's grandchildren, an important honor in Latin culture. I can't imagine Franco accepting such an honor if Trujillo had been a freemason(even if only a whispered rumor).

When I was in Haiti, I saw a Masonic Lodge in Jacmel. The decoration painted on the gates- a skull and some other Masonic symbols was rather interesting. Are there connections between Haitian and Dominicam lodges? What role(if any) did Haitian Masons play in Dominican independence?

Lodges in Santiago.
There are two that I know of.
One is on Beller Street, between Mella and San Luis.
The other is on Mella at the corner of Restauraci?n.
No idea why there are two and so close.

Masons were severely critical of the Catholic church during the 18th century, and were seen as an enemy. The "secrecy" was suspect.

The fact that so many founding fathers from the different Latin American nations were Masons, leads one to believe that the influence of the Enlightenment was a lot farther reaching than many are led to believe.

As for Trujillo: the power wielded by that family in 1930 was scary, so i do not doubt that he could have "pushed" a few buttons to get initiated...in his eyes, it would have been a "get to know your enemy" ploy.

As far as I'm aware, the Cuna de America lodge in the Colonial Zone is the only lodge that shares a common wall with a catholic church.

HB-Yes, , perhaps Trujillo would do something like that. Franco recruited a woman to spy on the Spanish freemasons(who were were headquartered in Portugal during his rule) and she inflitrated the group by marrying one of its leaders.

This is all rather intriguing...

Yes Trujillo was

Trujillo made it to the level of Knights of Malta., and had his own Order (Orden de Trujillo) given to him, by the Pope of those times.., its in your face :pirate: and you cant grasp the symbolism in the old military uniforms.

"IN THE LAND OF THE BLIND, THE ONE EYED MAN IS KING"

My grandfather was a KoM also.., as was balaguer., who led with a KoM government at the beginning but later changed his government to a freemason based one.

Mount Moria Lodge is closed. I have heard that a few of the original brothers are trying to bring it back to life, that's as much as I know.
