A massive fire has completely destroyed the old market "Mercado Modelo" in the center of downtown. Hundreds of people (Dominican and Haitian) are going to effected by this catastrophe as their livelihoods depend on it. Here are a few pictures I took earlier.

Santo Domingo.- The National Emergency and Security System 911 is managing a fire at a shopping mall on El Sol Street in the historic center of Santiago province. The blaze has impacted several premises, including a store and adjacent structures.

In response, the 911 System has deployed numerous emergency units to tackle the fire and provide on-site assistance. The response involves 15 fire trucks from Santiago, Cienfuegos, Licey, Villa González, San Víctor (Moca), and Puñal, along with an ambulance from the Directorate of Extra-hospital Emergency Services (DAEH), and units from the National Police and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC).

There have been no reported injuries or fatalities, though there is significant material damage. Firefighters are actively working to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. The 911 system advises citizens to yield to emergency vehicles and avoid the affected area to aid in the firefighting and safety efforts.

I was told the rain we had last night/ early this morning actually helped to prevent it from spreading.

If La Vega is an indication of how quickly a new official market replaced a burned old one, consider themselves lucky if a new one is finished while the DR is ruled by the same president.

I went to that market once. You could hardly move. I wouldn't have liked to be inside when the fire broke out.

From what I've been told it started around 12am/ midnight and burned for several hours. They ended up calling in a total of 15 fire trucks. This fire was massive.

Good to know. Probably nobody there then so no danger of mass casualties, Just a lot of goods lost and probably no insurance.:(
