Mayor of Santiago limits crowds at the Monumento de Santiago

The Mayor of Santiago, Abel Martínez, has banned the use of parking spaces on streets leading to the Monumento de Santiago, the popular roundabout where people regularly congregate in Santiago. The Mayor’s Office made the announcement after much evidence was shared over the weekend of street partying in the popular area, despite the high risk of people being infected with Covid-19. The Mayor’s Office said the crowds were violating physical distancing and putting everyone at risk.

Over the weekend, videos of hundreds of people gathered in the area, contributing to the spread of the virus. Santiago city is considered a hotspot of the disease in the Dominican Republic, with 3,629 cases of the 45,506 confirmed cases as of 12 July 2020.
