Medical Center/Doctor in Cabarete?

My husband is sick with a fever and I want to know if there is a good place to go to the doctor just in case he gets worse. We just moved to the area about 5 days ago, and we do not have any type of insurance. We also do not have a car, so staying within Cabarete would be best, if possible.

Also, how much can we expect to pay for a typical doctor's appointment?

Thank you so much!

There is a good clinic in the middle of Cabarete across from the Beach side. The name I don't remember, but they will take care of you. Price should not be too much, but ask before the exam.

Thank you. Are there any specific shops or restaurants that it is near to help me find it?

I think it is across form Papi's or close to it. Ask someone and you should be able to find it easily. There is a Dentist there also.

Dr Naurio Tatis makes house calls in Cabarete 809-972-6602.

This Dr. is excellent. He used to work at Servi-Med. Does he still work there? Highly recommended and speaks very good English.

Servi-Med (Bournigal) will charge you tourist prices! Ask how much before you have your consult. They were charging over $100 (US) last year to tourists.

Try to make it to CMC (Centro Medico Cabarete) between Sosua and Cabarete. Better and cheaper. Last time I saw a doctor (internist) a few years ago, I paid about 800 pesos for the consult.

lina, if you have a good solid plan to stay in DR i suggest you get health insurance. you can obtain one without residency/cedula. do it asap because it takes few months before it kicks in and offers any coverage to speak of.

i do not know prices in cabarete or sosua but a general doctor in POP will charge minimum 500 pesos. if there are any tests to be run they will test from few hundred to few thousand pesos. a visit with a specialist will be minimum 1000.

i am glad your husband is feeling better. for uncomplicated, daily stuff like cold or stomach pain you can skip the doctor and head for the pharmacy. nearly all meds - including antibiotics - are sold here without prescription.

It pays to let people know wherever you go that you are not a turista. When you ask for a quote, emphasize you don't want the tourist price. If you can speak at least a little Spanish, even better.

Oh boy...

Having a insurance is a must if you are in for a long terms. I was holding onto our insurance back home until we have finally thought we will be here for long time.

We had US insurance that covers emergencies but our son was in hospital for dengue the bill came out to little under RD$18000 and that two nights staying at private room with medicines and blood work. too small to go thru insurance. Without DR insurance they will require you to have deposit money of RD$20000 or credit card.

The doctor visit in big hospital like HOMS will be $1000 to consult/quick check ups and $800 in smaller hospital with small fees for blood works. With insurance we paid $300/$200 pasos for visit and blood work.

Fortunately, RD $1,000-18,000 for medical care does not scare me. After surviving in the US for years without medical insurance, and not being able to afford to even speak to a doctor, let alone have any tests... these prices actually sound like pocket change. My husband had two surgeries and a month long hospital stay in the US a few years back and the final bill came to half a million dollars.. thank goodness he had a state job at the time, and insurance covered all of it.

Anyway, it's good to know what to expect as far as prices, and really good to know about pharmacies being able to provide meds without a script.

lina, a surgery and hospital stay in a private clinic will easy run a bill of 10k dollars or more if the stuff is complicated. there is no point in saving on the insurance and later having to fork out all the money. that is, of course, if you want to stay in DR :)

Cabarete
Bear in mind that this thread is seven years old. Many things have changed since then.
Dr Naurio is still here. I don't think he's doing home consultations now because of the virus. He did a virtual consultation for me a month ago for 1000 pesos.
