I actually love Merengue Tipico, it was just a joke since it is seen as older folks music (and this is coming from someone who went dancing all the way to Nagua to fiestas tipicas on my last trip). I guess I will try Santiago next time :chinese:

Nonetheless, I like Mambo and Omega too. And, as you said, it may very well be a fad. But I see it as Reggaeton, that is geared towards a younger, more urban crowd.

Again,I am no expert, I just like to move my hips :)

When I go out to the clubs and his music comes on, the dance floor fills up; no room to dance.
I dig a few of his records, but like someone said earlier, I am not into his personal life. That being said, he should be locked up if he deserves it. :chinese:

As for Merengue Tipico, which is the oginal Merengue BTW, it has been popular for more than a century in DR, and nowadays is experiencing probably its best times, at least in the Cibao. I hear tipico every where in Santiago, in the colmados, in the streets, in the radio, heck even in the fancy clubs. Merengue Tipico bands have live presentation in some of the best clubs in Santiago several times a week, and those parties are always full.

I love my tipico, whether modern like El Ciego or older Ripiao, its rythms are actually very close to Palo... Palo all the way, fierce and fast.. that is something to shake your hips to Africaida!

First trip in DR, this song was playing EVERYWHERE. Back in NYC, it was rocking every bodega, cars uptown. If it is not dominican music, what is it ?:p

It is dominican music, only a very bad kind. Terrible use of language, terrible singing abilities, terrible messaged coveyed to the audience...and yeah, terrible video clip also.

He is alright for certain groups of people. I guess i do not fall in that group. Mind you, if in a club, i might dance to this type of music (if dancing with a cutie) BUT I wont go out of my way to purchase, download, or pretend to like. ;)

"Chambonea" is a stroke of genius, combining great lyrics with excellent rhythm.

It ranks way up there with Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening," The Grateful Dead's "A Touch of Grey," and Procol Harum's "Conquistador".

Please tell me you're being sarcastic...

I know you are being sarcastic, but as I said, great music to shake my hips to (what can I say? that's what I like to do).

All that music, with nice lyrics you are quoting, which came out before I was born, puts me to sleep, sorry.

To each its own.

Fair enough, really.
What really troubles me is that the more people that consumes this kind of "music", the more bands that try to make this "music". That's when everything started going downhill in latin music. Now all we have is this bunch of illiterate idiots whose "music" centers in only two themes: "I have more money than you" and "Tu si estas rica mami". We need to start demanding better quality in everything we consume. I always said that no music genre is bad in itself. Mediocre lyrics and mediocre music making make them bad. I have no respect for this kind of musicians (not that they care, anyway), but their deeds speak for them. They are all always in one serious problem or another. The sad thing being that the youth can't wait to get into the same kind of troubles to gain the respect they profess to these monsters...
