The Abinader administration is investing in the Santo Domingo Metro to better serve the 350,000 to 400,000 commuters that use the mass transport service every day. Rafael Santos Pérez, director of the Metro Office (Opret), told Diario Libre that expansion works are advanced.
To reduce the long lines and congestion the Opret is expanding five of the stations of Metro Line 1. The underground stations have capacity for six cars.
Two new tunnels are under construction. One will connect Line 2 to Line 1 in the direction to Santo Domingo North. Another will connect Line 1 in the direction to the Centro de los Heroes in southern Santo Domingo with Line 2. Eight new electric stairs have been installed.
Transfer time between the two lines is expected to drop from 20 minutes to 10 minutes starting in August. More cars have been purchased and will be operating in August 2025...
