The Abinader administration is investing in the Santo Domingo Metro to better serve the 350,000 to 400,000 commuters that use the mass transport service every day. Rafael Santos Pérez, director of the Metro Office (Opret), told Diario Libre that expansion works are advanced.

To reduce the long lines and congestion the Opret is expanding five of the stations of Metro Line 1. The underground stations have capacity for six cars.

Two new tunnels are under construction. One will connect Line 2 to Line 1 in the direction to Santo Domingo North. Another will connect Line 1 in the direction to the Centro de los Heroes in southern Santo Domingo with Line 2. Eight new electric stairs have been installed.

Transfer time between the two lines is expected to drop from 20 minutes to 10 minutes starting in August. More cars have been purchased and will be operating in August 2025...

I have used public transportation all my life and continue to use it when I am NYC.I went to high school using the subway and my children did the same.

Yesterday, I used the metro for the first time and I must say I'm impressed. Clean, fast, and cheap.Gets you around SD quickly.
We drove to Santa Domingo Motors at 7am and saw the crowds at the stations moving quickly to catch their trains. We had a 9am appointment and had to leave the car overnite. We took the metro which is AT, literally, SDMotors to Mega Centro Mall. From there a short gua gua ride to the house.

Highly recommend for travel around the city.

For those that "hate" SD or will "never go there again in your lifetime"...there is really no reason to reply. Have a blessed day to all.

While living in SDE I used it often.
Unfortunately back then it ended at the Eduardo Brito Station @ Gualey.
Safe, clean, cheap and efficient.

I don't know where they get their uniformed police women but from what I saw they have a high standard.:). Question: Are they part of any division of the police force of separate? Their uniforms seem to be apart from all others.

The metro doesn't go where I generally want to go. However, we took it once a couple of years ago just to experience it. Your observations were spot on to what we experienced. If it went more places I go, then I would use it much more.
