Military personnel are being busted for human smuggling after years of the authorities looking the other way.

Three Dominican soldiers have been sentenced to three months in prison for accepting bribes to smuggle Haitian migrants into the country.

The soldiers, Hansel Pérez García, Andro Américo Medina Guzmán, and Yunior Manuel Novas Cuevas, were stationed at the La Cadena checkpoint in the Carrizal-Elías Piña section. They were caught on surveillance footage accepting payments to allow Haitian nationals with irregular immigration status to cross the border.

The military personnel will serve their sentences at the Elías Piña Correctional and Rehabilitation Center.

This is not the first time Pérez García has been involved in such activities. According to press reports, he was implicated in a similar incident last June.

It could be if the law was bolder.
Like: The offenders are sentenced to live in Haiti for one year without their passport.

Where money is involved there will always be someone willing to violate the law to enrich themselves.
Most of us call these people 'politicians'

Team Luis is disrupting a business that is well-established.
Will take years to fix this problem.

The business should be booming now with all the deportees who want to come back. Easy to pick out some rotten apples now.
No need to reenter if they are released before heading to the border. This moneymaking system involves too many people that will never see a prison cell in the DR.

I know that but the OP is about those letting them in at the border.
Though it would be interesting to see the big difference between the amount of arrests and the amount that is actually brought to the border.

if I run the country, things will be different. Border will be closed forever and these people who try get in, will put in jail with no question asked. I will also make sure any law enforcement including the military if you get caught, you'll spend your life in the cell. That WILL scare them.

Time to cut the ties and I'll make sure any money found will be spend to rebuilt the country like roads, etc NOT in their pockets.

And who would enforce all of that? To make it happen, you have to import the whole police force (and whole army) from another country, normal one, like Norway.

Nah, I'll use DR people. Like what Luis did by hired 4,000 new police officers.

If you put all of those policies in place you would be assassinated in short order

Nope, even worse, no rotten food for them. They get force fed fast-food while in prison, clog up their veins and become obscenely obese ...... Death by gluttonery.😆😆

They already have rules in place for those folks. They set up a system where they pay a fee when they leave after paying a lot of 18% tax while they are in the DR.

Many of the Haitians now being deported did not enter the DR illegally, and everyone pays their share of that 18% tax on applicable purchases, so those two arguments don't hold too much value. As many have said here and in other threads, it's unfortunate there is no easy solution for those who did enter legally and due to chaos and bureaucracy now have extreme difficulty renewing visas, etc. Now, for the repeat overstay offenders, how about this: after overstaying and exiting twice, a deposit equal to a 12-month overstay must be paid to enter the DR the third time, and an escalating deposit for each subsequent entry after overstay? (just a thought, no need to go way off topic and debate that in this thread)

Most of the Haitians being deported did enter illegally. In fact, even with the deportations there are new illegal Haitians arriving daily, and most have no passport at all. Yes, there is chaos and bureaucracy making the situation worse, but the massive numbers of illegals are part of that problem. Difficult to separate the good plants in a field full of weeds. I agree with the rest of your statement.
