Ohhhh yes! What a slap in the face for all the americans who are not only protesting against the latino immigration to the US, but also for the white supremacist hate groups against latinos, they have now a Panamenian born Miss USA to represent them. Who understand them?:bunny:

Wow! I didn't know she was Panamenian born...but I knew she wasn't the typical 'all american' Miss USA...if you know what I mean!!!

Interestingly enough...I was just flipping channels last night...and she was the ONLY girl I saw..but it was still early...they hadn't even picked the 10 finalists...and today I find out she won...

Very pretty...and I'm very happy she's representing us latino women!!!

I wonder what Mr. Trump has to say about this...;)

SHE'S NOT LATINA!
Her parents were simply stationed in Panama. She was born on a US military base, which makes her American. Her parents are also American, and she has no "Latin" blood in her.

And how do you know that? How can you just assert something like that? Do you have any PROOF???

Boy, when I first saw her I thought she was DOMINICAN...she must have SOME latin blood in her...those features and that skin color are not 'all american'...:ermm:

Well...according to this...she might not be latina after all...but boy oh, boy...she is Panamenian after all...Your nationality is determined by where you are born...you could be black and be born in China...that makes you Chinese... ;)

Not if you are born in a U.S. Embassy or U.S. Military Base, technically that is American soil. If a person is born in the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, that person is American. Same principal applies to Panama, especially if she was born at the Panama Canal Military Base. In fact I saw a Documentary where Americans stationed there stated they had restrictions when interacting with the Panamanian territory.

Not an attack, but since when is black a nationality?

Anyway's good for her, the population of the United States of America is an almagam that consists of so few of it's true indigenous population that an "American" can be just about any combination of races that can be imagined.

On a side, technically being born in a country perhaps makes you "Dominican" or "American" etc. but I have always felt that the weight of your family tree consitutes more of your true identity.

I never said her being black determined her nationality...only the fact that she was born in Panama, and that to me, and to some other posters, makes her Panamenian...

The racist comments on this thread are disgusting. The USA is a melting pot from all the world. English names are a minority (phone book surveys). Asians immigrated more massively than into LA since early 1800's. Africans have several centuries in the USA. You can't have it both ways. Get off your BS!

Countries have different rules about nationality it is either "law of the place" or "law of the blood".
Meaning in some countries the fact that your parents are English will mean you are English, whereas in the States (it used to be young country filled by immigrants) it made sense to make everyone born there an American. But this principle is not a general rule in other countries.

She is beautiful, no questions about it, would be interesting to know is she feels only American or maybe also a bit Panamian, have heard that Americans in Panama were very much sticking together, and didn't really intergrated with Panamians.

This is funny, the same thing happened with Tiger Wood. When he began his career as a golfer, he was black and as he started to kick ass, people bagan diluting his blackness.

The only reason some of you people want to claim her as "Latina" is because she's beautiful and won Miss USA. I have a question, how would you classify Senator John McCain*? Is he Latino or American?

This is a good conversation, it relates to DR regarding Dominican nationality and foreign born children. Under DR constitution, regardless if the children was born in DR, if the person is in transit or if one of the parent is not a Dominican citizen or national then that person would not be Dominican.

Being "Latino" is not just where a person is born, but also includes language and culture. Miss USA never grew up in a Latino family, and I bet if she knows Spanish, it would be equivalent to US high school standards which means she know nothing.

* John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone

I have always found it irritating how when in conversation nationality comes up and a lot of people here in Canada, when asked that question, answer with..."Oh, I am Scottish" or "I am Italian" when in fact they were born in Canada and their parents were born in Canada and their grandparents were born in Canada and their Great-Grandparents were born in Canada and so on...and to top it off most have never even set foot on land in the country they claim to be from or know anything about it.

I think your Nationality is where YOU were born and your Heritage is where the majority of your ancestors came from? Would you agree?

The only time I hear anyone say they are from Canada is when they are travelling outside of Canada and it benefits them. I know if I was born here in Canada I would be proud to say I am Canadian. I just think more people should say it, that's all.
