Monte Grande Dam controversy

Investigative journalist Altagracia Salazar questioned the mega investment of the government in the Monte Grande dam when she says most of the waters will mainly benefit a private foreign company in Barahona. She explains the waters were originally channeled to benefit a state sugar plantation that later was sold to a private company.

Diario Libre reports the dam that feeds off the Yaque del Sur river, in Barahona, is under construction “to guarantee the supply of drinking water to 400,000 people, stimulate the expansion of agricultural production structures, improve health indices and encourage the generation of hydroelectric energy”. The dam construction works contemplates mechanisms for flood control in the provinces of Barahona, Independencia, Pedernales and Azua, reports the newspaper.
