More than 13% of the population is diabetic

The National Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition (Inden) says 13.45% of the Dominican population suffers from diabetes. A recent study carried out by Inden with the Universidad Iberoamericana (Unibe) reveals that 9.3% of Dominicans are pre-diabetic.

The general director of Inden, Ammar Ibrahim says the medical condition is more frequent in women than in men. He said this is probably because women are more likely to see a doctor and take better care of their health.

Elizabeth Cuevas, coordinator of the Diabetology and Nutrition Residency for Unibe, says in recent years there has been an increase in type 2 diabetes in children and young people. She pointed out that more than 50% of the children attending the center suffer from this type of diabetes, which is directly related to obesity.
