motoconcho rates
Well, as a participant in the 'local' economy, the difrence between 10 and 30 pesos matters to me a lot. Not to mention giving a whole world of something to the guy who tries to rip me off. It is about respect, and the price reflects that respect. As far as live and let live, I can live a lot longer at 10 pesos than at 30 pesos. Any questions?
The only concho price I know is to & fro our condos from Rocky's.
It's only a 1 minute drive and they charge 20 in the daytime and 30 at night.

I never paid less than 100 (for example to go to the Gold's Gym in Santiago from the City Center I was asked 100 pesos). Words "American" and "$$$" are written all over me I guess. I always end up paying at least a couple of dollars to the drivers and some of them even fall in love with me afterwards

We have plenty. RD 20 to 30 is usually good for about up to two miles or so. To go from, like for example, El Leon Jimenez to the Calle del Sol, RD60 on up would be normal.
when i was in PC late last year, i paid 50 RD to get from the bahia principe to plaza bavaro but i asked before i hopped on. i dont know if that was a good or bad rate and trust me, i dont look like a local and was wearing my AI bracelet (yikes!) but if i took a taxi, i would have cost me about $13 USD! i guess its just the luck of the draw
i use the motorconchos a lot when i am in sosua. i always ask in advance the price because if not they ask you any price. i know the rate intown is 20rd during the day and 30 at nite.
if they quote the right price i usually always give an extra 10rd as a tip. if they quote highter i say no, and then usually they ask the right price, but then i dont tip because they tried to charge highter.
i find late at night especially going to and from the casino, the amount is 40 rd.
it is always good to try to use the same operators. they know you are supporting them and they usually are good back...

i try not to use motoconcos but if i have to... i never ask the price, i ask "tu tienes donde es calle xxx?" when they say yes i get on and give 20 pesos when i get off with "gracias caballero".

Absolutely. If you know the correct price, the above suggestion works like a charm, even if they start yapping away, you just keep on walking.
exactly, before each trip i ask how much should i pay for services, be it motoconcho or beach bed (whatever those things are called) and i pay the exact amount. and i haggle all the time! i think there is enough gringos paying double or tripse because they do not know, or worse even - because they do not care. i care! (gotta be stingy, prices of cereza cake in la mariposa went up, i spend my leftover change there... :cheeky
when i was in SD from february 2-25th, i learned a similar lesson with taxis. i knew i was paying more than i should have been paying so i had a local friend of mine call a taxi for me whenever i needed one and ask the rate. when it was time for me to pay up, i gave the driver exactly the amount that was quoted over the phone even though they started asking for more. when they started talking i just said started to walk away and said "no hablo espanol... gracias!" i went from paying $250 pesos in the beginning to paying $150!
It's good to ask first, my third trip to Sosua I agreed to pay a barber 150 pesos for a haircut, when I got out of his chair, after a shave also, he demanded 700 pesos, I was peeved and gave him 600 pesos, later finding out the going rate is 100 pesos, inclusive.... One motor concho demanded 400 pesos for an intown ride, with one quick stop to get a phone number, I gave him 40 pesos, because that was double to 4 times the current rate at that time. So, I always ask and if you are not familiar with whoever are doing what, it can be problem. Americans and Dominicans sometimes are expected to pay different prices. And I hate to have that heated discussion when i'm in the barbers chair getting a shave with a straight razor, which did happen to me once.
