Moving to Dominican Republic

I am a American from the USA and want to move to Santo Domingo and want to know the Best neighborhoods to look for a house to rent or buy some one said Los Cacicazgos and also Arroyo Hondo all information will be help full for my move and also will be looking for a Real Estate agent that knows the areas and specks English
Thanks for the help

Have you stayed here as long as 6 months? This Country is WAY different living here than just coming for 1-2 week vacations! I don't care how long you have been coming here for Vacays, so not similar!
RENT FIRST! DO NOT BUY!!!! To make sure you like the area you are in!!!! Or if you like living here at all! It's no cake walk!

I like it here but it is crazy ass backwards of the USA/Canada! Which in a lot of ways I like the others I just shake my head... and have learned to just go with the weird ass flow!

Read this fellow's posts! Either he is not a native English speaker or he is not an educated person. He has taken up with an overseas Dominican woman with 2 boys.

Think people.

Can this person afford to go to the best areas of Santo Domingo?

Something is not right. The answers have been given. Let's see where this one goes.

Just saw that you live in Costa Rica.... That place seems alot better than the Dr! Do some MAJOR soul searching on whether this lady and her kids are worth it. If i could i would move to Costa Rica in a second! I am too lazy to move from this country though...seriously you need to know what you are getting yourself into.....Will you have to take care of her whole family??

Jo Jo,

Welcome to DR1!

I'd strongly encourage to to do a short term rental at an aparta-hotel, then get out and look around. Arroyo Hondo means different things to different people. The best thing you can do, frankly, is drive (or better, walk) around the neighborhoods and look for rental signs (they are everywhere).

Take your time, and remember you can always move.

What are you looking for in SD? You may find that other cities or towns are a better fit for you, so stay open-minded. Most any other place on the island will likely be less expensive, too, although there will be fewer cultural/educational/work options.

Take it easy, and good luck.

If you can afford it (2500$+) theres a lot of nice place in Cuesta Hermosa (arroyo hondo) with a lot of security, one of the safest place to rent a house.

15-20mins drive from downtown (malecon) when theres not too much traffic and few mins away from many grocery store, gym and all the things you need.

Don't rent in a place that doesnt have a very good and serious security, you will feel unsafe, i did it in the past and regret it, ended up moving out after a few months and losing some $ with the deposits.

Like many said, you should rent first.

What part of Costa Rica do you live in??? If I were you I would take a mini vacation to Santo Domingo to see if it is a place you can see yourself living in. San Jose is not the best place in the world, but it is not Santo Domingo not saying SD is awful. You will see what I mean when you get there.

You will give up a lot of things moving from CR to DR. Ticos and Dominicans share NOTHING in common. Example you like rice and beans in the mornings?? Well you won't ever get this in DR.

I live in Jaco Costa Rica I been to Santo Domingo lots of times and Hate Rice and Beans LOL

Wow!!! you live in Jaco and you want to move to Santo Domingo????? This type of move is very rare its like you going backwards??? If you want a big city you are not too far from San Jose. I know people that would give their right arm in DR to live on the Pacific Coast in Costa Rica Playa Hermosa is one of my favorite places. I have a partner and we rent out a condo in Escazu right outside San Jose so I am in CR a bit.

I hope you know what you are doing because NO WAY!!! would I leave a place like this to move to Santo Domingo, Ponce PR yes, but Santo Domingo NOPE!!! Like I said I hope you know what you are doing.

BTW Do not pay more then 500USD to 600USD no matter what anyone tells you. You can pay 1500USD a month in SD for an apartment and still have a 50/50 shot of being robbed a block or two from your home. There are NO safe areas in SD there are SAFER areas then others. Many people move to SD and think because they pay a very high rent they are immune to the violence in SD.

I can't think of an area that will best suit you because of where you lived in CR. Good Luck with the move.

500.00 to 600.00 ROFLMAO!

You can get a very nice apartment for 600USD in Santo Domingo. My ex wife and daughter lives in a building and I pay almost half of that close to 320USD in Santo Domingo Este and they have NEVER had their apartment broken into unlike some of the safe so called area in DR. 3bed 2bath in a very well maintain building.

Maybe I will pay 2,500USD or 3,000USD on Balboa or Punta Pacifica in Panama City a big maybe but Santo Domingo Dominican Republic not a chance.

If a Dominican family pays close to 25,000RD a month for rent they have a pretty nice place to live in.

SD Este is really a different city

Sure the rents are lower and sure there are nice areas but please do not compare the pirces

Be clear that it is SD ESTE.

And that is fine also depending on the color of your skin.. a blanquito gringo might not feel so safe over there,.

My blanquito friend had her place broken into 3 times in the first three months.. We just do not blend in quite so easily.

For Santo Domingo proper

the budget for a two bedroom is more in the $700 range.. and UP
