I went to this website to find all the museums in the DR: https://museosrd.gob.do/museos/

There are 16 listed, 10 of which are in the capital. I'm interested in going to most of them, so I thought it might be helpful to other if I listed them, so they're below. The Amber Museum, #17, is not on the website because I believe it's private, but it's so close in the Zona Colonial that I thought I would list it too. Most if not all of the 16 official museums have minimal entrance fees. I've been to # 12 and 15, so there's a lot for me to get to. But given I'm retired, I got the time.

1 Centro Cultural y Museo Horacio Vásquez, Tamboril, about 18km east of Santiago
2 El Museo Nacional de Historia Natural “Prof. Eugenio de Jesús Marcano”, 4km west of ZC
3 Centro Cultural Eduardo León Jimenes, a bit east of Santiago
4 El Museo de Historia y Geografía Dominicana, 3.5km west of ZC
5 Museo de las Atarazanas Reales MAR, a smidge north of the ZC, an easy walk from the plaza de españa
6 Museo Casa Fuerte Juan Ponce de León, 155 km due east of the CZ, 55 km sw of PC
7 Museo del Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, very close to downtown Santiago
8 Museo de la Familia Dominicana del Siglo XIX, in the ZC just south of parque Colón
9 Museo del Hombre Dominicano, 3 km west of the ZC, 1 block south of Av Mexico
10 Museo de las Casas Reales, in the ZC, just south of the Plaza de España
11 Museo de Arte Moderno, 3 km west/southwest of the ZC, 2 blocks south of Av Mexico, ajacent to Museo del Hombe Dominicano
12 Museo Fortaleza San Felipe en Puerto Plata
13 Museo 26 de Julio en Moca
14 Museo Faro a Colón, SDEste, about 3km east of the ZC.
15 Museo Fortaleza de Santo Domingo, in the ZC, 1 block south of El Conde.
16 Museo Alcázar de Colón, in the ZC, north of the Plaza de España.
17 Amber Museum, in the ZC on Arozobisbo Meriño

they are very nice in their own way and very historic in regards to history of the carrib and latin american countries colonial period. My advise is to Make sure you do your research and learn what it is that interest you so you could have context and know what you're looking at . Most of the beauty of the island is in the nature so i think shorten the list to a few that REALLY interest you and go to those .

Lol in Madrid spain my aunt got tired of seeing castle and church after church after church it became a blur after a while lol

There are more.

For example, in Montecristi there is a small museum in the house where Cuba’s Manifiesto was signed by Cuban liberator José Martí and Dominican (also a hero of Cuba’s independence) Máximo Gómez, there is a small museum at the La Isabela Historic Park, Art Museum Bellapart and quite a few more off the top of my head.

They could be closed due to renovation, but I doubt it.

Most of the ones that have to do with the colonial period are in the Colonial Zone. Most outside of there have to do with the DR after independence. In the list of the OP, I see 10 museums that have nothing or only a part to do with the colonial period, a list of a total of 17 museums.

I've been to most of the ones in ZC as well as La Fortaleza in POP, and El Monumento and Centro Cultural in Santiago. The latter has a couple of permanent exhibits as well as some changing ones. One of the exhibits has ancient artifacts from assorted excavations, as well as photos and items of old Santiago. They have a large parking lot as well as a reasonably priced cafeteria, and a nice courtyard with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. I found some of the modern art to be atrocious, but to each his own. I believe they occasionally have live performances in the evening, but I've never been to one.

I also recall a small rum museum in ZC, but I don't know the name. Maybe it is one of the ones you listed? Of course, the cathedral should not be missed. Lots to explore for anyone who has an appreciation of history, no matter whose it is.

Is the chocolate museum (there was also a train or something) still in the ZC? I remember it from years ago. I do not really go the ZC that much anymore.

There is a train that goes thru and around the ZC. There is also a chocolate place, I never knew it was a museum. Maybe I should check it out. I went to one in Puerta Plata and liked it.

These pics are from today's visit to the Natural History Museum. Well worth the price of admission (gratis por ancianos). 5 levels and interesting stuff. I was surprised I could read so much in Spanish.
