I smile slightly as I read all the virus threads here.

In normal times, there are many naysayers when we talk about -
Why don't we have this/that?
Why don't we do it like USA/Europe ?

the overwhelming response is -
Because this is NOT 1st world ----- it's 3rd world , developing nation at best !!

Well - this is where we are now
Our situation is different than NYC, ITALY, UK and so on

Why?
Population size........9-10M
Easier to control

An Island
easier to isolate

Less mobility...
How many people have never left their province let alone the country ???
Not very cosmopolitan compared to other countries
Currently , intervillage travel is cut off for public transport.... less chance of transfer/infection

I am sure you all can think of more -----

Personally, I feel safer here than I might in another locale

If you want fear....
I mentioned them above.....USA, UK, ITALY.... and others

Broadly speaking, the situation here is more benign.... not perfect... not without danger
But overall - less so ------ says me

Just musings

Let's hear yours

I agree...in the campo or smaller towns. But in the urban areas of the DR, "social distancing" is much more difficult, like in the urban 1st world areas. Some barrios are seriously piled-on packed.

I do feel safer here than many parts of the US. But I wouldn't live in any tight, compact urban area of the US.

My Idaho friends are feeling safe.

One downside here is personal security is the S#!t truly hits the Fan. Where could one go for safety?

I agree with everything you say but there is one thing that sticks in my mind.

Because this is a former banana republic, my concern is that martial law could be declared at any minute so that the politicians in charge could seize power for a long term.

For now, I feel great here and have no desire to leave except to see family. But like I said, in the back of my mind there is a risk of sheet hitting the fan and hitting it big. Obviously the risk is not big enough for me to consider leaving, even if I could.

Agreed.

Given the totality of data and options you would be hard pressed to find a better place to ride out a flu virus.

No complaints here.

My nephew and wife flew from Mexico to Toronto...both contacted CV-19 on the plane...both quite sick at home in isolation.
Same has happened to many other EXPATS returning on last flights out ....Safer to stay in el campo outside the urban zone.

Just heard that friends of wife , husband died family sick in LaVega he was around 26 with diabetes. Owned and operated small supermecardo.
And so as we all speculate the fit is hitting the shan anyway.... And we can't do a thing about it......

Hang in there, have faith and may the Force be with you
God bless.

In desperation I would choose to expire here than go to any hospital.
Albeit I would want to safeguard the family from myself.
So that would mean isolation to the cottage on my property.
Its a crap shoot , dices are loaded and the odds are not good...thats the positive side of the matter...

But when I see ''Mad Max'' driving down the road I shall hide my fresh water supply. LOL

Apparently the cure for the virus has been discovered in a popular WhatsApp thread across DR. You only need:
Bicarbonato de sodio
Miel de abeja
Cebolla
Jabón de cuaba

Musing again,
When this is back to normal I suggest we get together and have a freaking convention and party to boot.
For those of us who survive (yes me too, gotta think positive) in our designated area eg. North Coast etc.
Rules: Maintain social distancing.
No kissie huggies
Wear face masks and gloves
Food will be take out boxes and drinks limited to rum, beer and tequila to scrub the internals.

I have just returned from a Playero run.... and Super Pola.... from Cabrera

Couple of observations -

Older people do not wait in line (nor at Super Pola)
No more glove requirement
Get there early - the shelves get skinny ( I arrived 10:15am )
Big line up at both

Passing Cabarete - the drive-thru line at Banco Popular was BIG!!
stretching out into and down the road
All banks were busy.... in every town

I was stopped (both ways) at Sabaneta .....
told to wear the mask when driving !!

All in all - painless.....

I'm poor. I use a dining chair for dips. Oh wait that was years ago. I mostly sit on my a$$ and work at the desk.

Well, WW, I guess it had to happen sooner or later in these pandemic times. The US CEO of a condom producing company told the media a few days ago condom sales and sexual activity have slowed since the pandemic started. I don't know. My gut feeling is condom sales may be slower but social isolation is not stopping sexual activity. In fact, it may be stimulating it. I wouldn't equate one with the other. I'm guessing you may see a baby boom in the DR and other countries in nine months time. Panboomers, a whole new generation born out of boredom.Remind me of what the fishermen in Atlantic Canada say. In the summer we fish and copulate and in the winters we don't fish. Lol!

I expect 'copulate' isn't the word used in that phrase

I suspect a bit of alliteration might be called for..... 'f's
