Ok so I have staying in DR for more than a year at a time and got nailed with a fee when leaving the country - ok no problem...

However this time I arrived Jan 9th and left Feb 9th and was told I had to pay the 800RD because I had been there one month.

I thought you can stay up to 3 months before this happens?

Does anyone know what the truth is?

From 30 days to 3 months 800 pesos. 3 to 6 months a 1000 pesos.
1 xtra day cost u 800 pesos:classic:

Ok got it - I don't know why I thought it was 3 months. Out of curiosity - what happens at 1 year then?

Suggestion......... Go to the office on Malecon after three months and pay the overstay fee. They give you the receipt etc. I gave this receipt to the felah at the airport after three years. He waved me on without checking the dates.

.

I am so proud of you son, did it make you feel better to beat the system out of RD5700?
Why not pay what you owe instead of adding to the already broken system?
Did you @ least give him a nice propina or scurry off like a rat that just got free cheese?

I wasn't going to say anything because of the naysayers who will claim that's not what they did five years ago, however thought I share my recent experience trying to pay my overstay and "legalize" my status at "La Direccion General de Migration (DGM)" Again is my very recent experience. It may save someone some grief and certainly some time.

I for many years have payed my overstay fee as RAAAY has done. ( I use to get the extension just before my tourist card validity expired)- Easy day. In and out- 5~15 minutes. Why this way? It has given me a peace of mind knowing that my status in-country was legit once I went over 30 days. Just in case I accidentally ran over someone's chicken or whatever, the legal "system" would not be able to classify me as an "illegal alien".

(Some interesting DR1 reading on difference in paying before tourist card expires or upon departure: See post #15 Extend tourist Visa& Driving Licence - Page 2)

Recently I went to pay, as I always done, Impuestos por Estadia (overstay fees) para Residencia Provisional O Tarjeta de Turista (Tourist Card) at the Ventanilla Extranjeria (Foreigners Window). The line was about 30 deep (mostly Haitian nationals). After about an hour wait in line, the official stated I needed to complete an application and provide a medical certificate from one of their approved doctors. After some discussion that this can not be correct I left empty handed.

Two weeks later (and another long line) I tried again with a different official. After much discussion that this didn't make sense since I can, without formalities, pay the fee at the airport upon departure, I again left empty handed.

Third time a local paralegal tried. Same results, fill out application and provide medical certificate. ( I gave up, paid at the airport).

Here is the paperwork given to pay at DGM. Requirements:

1. Two copies of passport with remaining validity of at least six months. 2. Two copies of last DR entry stamp. 3. Completed form with current DR address. 4. Completed medical certificate from authorized medical doctor.

Hmmmm, I wonder if they're going to be eliminating the airport payments, as some had suggested might happen???????

Sounds like things are changing..........

But what could they do to you at the airport, not let you leave???

I was only trying to be "fully" legal during my (over) stay. See link above for potential problems with not extending your tourist card.

Oh I agree with you. I'm in the same boat, especially with the driving. Some say you can drive here for 3 months, others say 1 month, either way I'll be over. It's one of the reasons that I'm getting all my paperwork together to apply for naturalized citizenship, easier than permanent residency if one qualifies.

That seems like a tough sentence to me!!!!!
You have your thoughts reversed. The problem is not staying, but coming back in with a previous deportation order (voluntary or not) annotated in your status. There are two kinds of unhappy travelers, those that want to leave but can't and those who want to return and are denied entry.

You are authorized to drive on foreign drivers license/International Drivers Permit for up to 90 days AS LONG is all other provisions of your stay are legit. So if you extend your tourist card you are good for 90 days from your date of your entry. If you allow to tourist card to expired you are technically no longer complying with the law and your status is not "regularized" i.e. illegal alien status.

What Panama does is to stamp the passport that that person is never to be allowed reentry. Colombians are all over Panama and the overstay fee there is $50.00 a month. So you get into 7 years you've built up quite a fee. ANd you wanna go home to visit Mama. I knew a lady there who ha dthat problem and she can never go back to Panama.
