Energía 2000, a leading energy company in the Dominican Republic, announced today that its highly anticipated Manzanillo Power Land power plant is nearing completion. Manzanillo Power Land is a privately-owned combined-cycle power plant primarily fueled by natural gas. The energy generation plant is scheduled to inject 414 MW to the national power grid and is at US$1.25 billion is the largest ever made in a border province.

The facility is under construction in Pepillo Salcedo, Montecristi province, on the country’s most northwestern coast. Commercial operations are scheduled to start in the summer of 2025. Construction is already 80% complete. The project was begun in December 2022.

The power plant is described as a model in energy efficiency in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Built following a plan by Siemens Energy, its innovative design and...

Burn , baby burn. The gods know we need more power all the time with all this new construction.
Windy, at least they are thinking ahead by using LNG instead of coal. It will increase power generation capability but the issue, as your well aware, is dependable delivery via the current grid structures, poor maintenance, and poor management. That’s not going away for a long time.

Of course, LNG is better than oil or coal, but still creating the earth warming CO2.
My point is that fossil fuel power plants are not going away any time soon. Hydrogen plants, we will see on that.

Love to see a small scale CANDU modular reactor providing dependable power to 100,000 DR homes. Canada can provide the unit, the setup, operator training, monitoring, and the uranium fuel. Poland just signed a CANDU deal with Canada. The DR should do the same.

Which customers is this power slated to serve?
I'm sure this is the solution to the illegal connections right?

That’s what I thought too, but my BIL who lives in El Million (SD) told us today that his never goes off for more than 10 minutes. ☹️
In our part of San Cristobal (formerly known as 24/7 luz) it is now exactly at 6:00 am, or 10:00 am, or 02:00 pm or 06:00 pm depending the day that they shut off our area for 4 hours. In the campo we also used to have 10 minutes max.

He needs to come to my house. All I need to do is start the washing machine and then it goes off for 4 hours

The solution now is to cut off everybody for 4 hours a day. Great.
F'ing stupid the management is of the EDEs

Back in the day of Hippo being president, power was cut off up to 12 hours to the worst barrios who were stealing power.
It did not make them pay for power and 4 hour blackouts for everybody will not work just like blackouts didn't work before.
More power will be stolen charging and discharging battery inverter systems!

Get rid of the morons of EDE and get companies that cut off people who don't pay.

As for small fission nuke devices to provide power, that is a good idea.

We’re at Playa Najayo. Everyone got rid of their inverters when batteries died because there was no need. We were 24/7 with some little 5-10 minute blackouts. It’s been awful the past few weeks. Mostly 3-4 hours but this week it’s worse.

Yeah. I still have 4 lead acid batteries (NAPA) which seem to be good, despite being 3 years old. Now the NAPA batteries are AGM type meaning they are even better and should last longer but at 10,500 pesos each replacing 4 takes a bit out of my ice cream budget.

But 3-4 hours a day - for me it's usually in the AM, when I want to do laundry and can't on batteries). They should do it at night to really punish the thieves, without inverters, who would live in the dark

Starting at 2 AM?

Looks like the battery inverter companies business will ramp back up again.

Idiots run the EDEs.

Relax folks.
It's all smoke and mirrors.
If they were capable of fixing the electricity problem here it'd a been fixed a long time ago.

EDEs and battery inverter companies work together just like Coraaplata/Cora[insert city] and water truck companies... One truck driver even admitted this to us once... The owner who he was working for in fact had to do with Coraaplata...

I recall the local manager of Coraapplata owning a water delivery company.

I don't see the same relationship with Trojan Battery or inverter companies with the EDEs, I just see the stupidity of the EDEs.

I would like to see a calculation on lost revenue and loss to the GDP of 4 hour shut downs.
The negative economic impact is huge.
Not to mention the impression it leaves on everyone visiting which is that DR doesn't have its basic sh*t together.
Good news travels fast but bad news travels like wildfire.
