and here I always thought they got their licenses in a box of corn fle

What do you think are the percentages of drivers of motos, cars and taxis with valid driver's licenses in DR ?
40%-45% is my bet, the rest have an old expired one or they never had one.

Yes, but it's cheap. Around 500 pesos. I think most have it because that's usually one of the first things AMET asks for.

I paid $500 pesos. A woman came in the room and every time a screen would come up she would tell me whether to answer yes or no. She said I had to get a score of 70 and there were 10 questions. After 7 questions she left the room. I passed!

Then was then, Duece, now is now.
The test is now 20 multiple choice questions and no one made any attempt to help us in any way.
We're going back again on Friday to try our luck again.

One key word to know is "multo" or "multa" which is a fine or a penalty. Many of the questions will ask if there can be a fine for doing the described action. When I went a couple of years ago for a license at Puerto Plata, an official took a group of about ten of us (including me and one other gringo) to an office and reviewed the rules - a little coaching session - before we all took the test. That really helped. The official emphasized that sometimes the test asks if something is correct and sometimes asks if the something can be penalized and careful attention must be given to this difference.

My wife wants to take driving lessons and get her license. I've checked a few places and they don't have classroom learning, it's all behind the wheel. So the written part is self-learned I guess. I'm trying to come up with a sample test, anybody have some extra questions I can add?

Here's what I have so far.

Revised Driving Test (Written Part)

1) Making a left turn from the Far Right Lane is:
a) No problem.
b) A faster way to turn left.
c) Not Recommended because you might spill your beer.
d) Not allowed.

2) Driving down the middle of the road and taking up two lanes is:
a) Better options for when you can't decide if you will go right or left.
b) Easier to avoid potholes and parked cars
c) Keeps other cars farther away from you so you won't crash
d) Not allowed.

3) You have the right-of-way when:
a) The light is green and the intersection is clear.
b) Everyone has the right away under any circumstances.
c) Always
d) Unconditionally yes.

4) Stopping on the highway to buy mangos is:
a) OK as long as you leave your car running.
b) A great way to support local farmers.
c) Dangerous as heck especially when you don't pull over to the shoulder.
d) No problem. I'm hungry.

5) Tail lights are:
a) too expensive
b) pretty when they flash
c) required
d) optional

6) Insurance is:
a) What is insurance?
b) For rich people
c) Money for nothing
d) required

These are very good. I have seen this test before I think, there were a few more questions. I recall being told that if I should cause a traffic accident to not get out of my car and speed away when no one is looking and before the police get there.

In Santo Domingo, they had a girl there that would do the translation for you. The day I went, she helped me through the process but couldn't stay for the exam. But she took me to the girl running the room before she left. The computer I had had the some of the same questions. She also gave me hints at what to listen for. Got an 85%
