It was actually a rhetorical question, but yes, that confirms that I needed to unlock my free iPhone and get a number to get WhatsApp, unlike what was implied above by just using a locked phone with just WiFi which won't allow WhatsApp to work.

Well I was thinking about that LG phone that has been in my closet for about 2 years unused, and that a turbosim might work but no it doesnt.... so I just contacted AT & T and to my great surprise they gave me the the unlock code and instructions on how to do it....and now I have a almost new LG phone that works perfect, ans of course I dont need... just goes to show if you keep things long enough something might happen.......

You can get WhatsApp on a locked iPhone by just using WiFi, but you do need a SIM.

Borrow an unlocked phone for a few minutes and put the SIM in it. Go through the WhatsApp setup procedure on the locked phone and the WhatsApp code will be sent to the unlocked phone with the SIM in it. Enter the code in the locked phone and WhatsApp should work on it.

That does sound like it would work for WhatsApp.

I've been playing with my cell phone from the states and using my wifi it works fine. Skype and email and internet are good. Does this mean it is unlocked. I tried to replace the sim from my other 2 throw away DR cell phones but they are too small and do not fit. If I ask Claro for a new sim, that fits, do you think that will work or is there more to it.

Being able to use WifI is not sufficient to know if it is unlocked. Putting in a SIM card and it working without issue is sufficient to know that it is unlocked. They have a special cutting device to trim the SIM card.

Any phone locked or unlocked will be fine for Wifi. It is the SIM that will not work if it is locked.

It all depends on if the phone is locked to a network. Using features that work on wifi won't tell you whether it's locked or unlocked.

Windeguy--why don't you buy a Skype number (can get one for any country) and try that? It's only a few USD and it may solve your problem with being able to use Whatsapp without unlocking the phone.

I bought a smartphone by mistake that was locked(T-Mobile). I only found out when I put an Altice sim in it and I couldn't make calls. However, WhatsApp worked just fine without having to do anything special. All WiFi apps and features worked.

My free iPhone7 is unlocked by using a TurboSim. Works with Altice without issue to call DR phones.

For calling the US I normally use Google Voice which works very well.

For others I use free SKYPE calls.

For yet others I use free WhatsApp calls.

I had a locked T-Mobile phone I wanted to use with Claro. I took it to the Claro service kiosk at La Sirena where they were able to unlock it and get it connected to Claro.

I was wondering the same thing. I brought in a relatively inexpensive Samsung that was carrier locked(T-Mobile). It was advertised unlocked. Two places both said it was impossible to unlock it until the contract on it expired. Would a TurboSim work? How much do they cost?
I use MetroPCS piggy backed on T mobile for my Samsung J2. Search around the phone and find the "unlock" icon. Then do what you want.
