Many Dominicans learn to dance at a very early age ,even if it is only Bachata and Merengue and they build up their leg and hip muscles but unlike Cuba that is usually the end of it . This is a pity because there is a mountain of work on stage and in AI hotels and on cruise boats for talented dancers and neither colour nor race is a barrier. The world wide ballet audiences around the world adored Carlos Acosta and now his Cuban Dance Company and the Cuban success could easily be replicated here in the DR.

I was struck by that same line, and it's unfortunate. Ballet and similar dancing is very athletic, much like figure skating and gymnastics. It's unfortunate that artistic expression such as this is considered effeminate. Try doing this after a few Presidentes.

Yes, Dominicans think that ballet dancing may not be macho, yet there are no such stigmas for bachata nor merengue dancers..further proof of the ignorance and lack of education here. If they could only see Carlos Acosta carry his ballerina high with one arm around the stage, they may think differently.

There is a few gentleman (I think they are from Venezuela) that do an entertaining break dance / acrobat routine at an intersection at Sarasota Ave. Afterwords they pass a hat around for a few pesos. These guys are built like Olympic gymnasts
