At the time of his appointment, he was serving as vice minister for bilateral foreign policy at the Ministry of Foreign Relations and secretary of international cooperation for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

Gomez Beato has outlined his key objectives for his upcoming mission and said his focus will be on strengthening ties with China and attracting increased investment to encourage more Chinese companies to establish a presence in the Dominican Republic, reports Hoy.

Great, can they make their cheap crap in the DR now?
And infiltrate, now that USAID is dead, the DR thoroughly and control the government here?
Time will tell. Maybe they can finish the construction at Sosua Beach on those pesky plazas, no?

What does the DR sell in China ? If anything. Cigars maybe ? Are there tourists from China ?
Didn't the Chinese want to build a hotel in the Dominican Republic that would cater to the Chinese tourists? I thought we had a thread discussing that a few months back.

Chinese tourists are kind of like a mirror image of Hotel California. They checkout but they never leave
Like the guitar playing and singing wandering minstrels singing that tune on the north coast who arrive on nearly every airplane and don't leave.
I have not met a Chinese one yet, but that eventuality is inevitable.

Chinese are everywhere in Santiago and they own pretty much all of the retail establishments downtown.

They skirted import laws, fees and regulations (including taxes) offered their goods at prices so low not even the street vendors could compete with them and now that they have a monopoly in the city, because no Dominican could compete with them, they raise the cost and fix prices.

My 16 year old surrogate daughter was complaing the last time she visited me here about how there's no more variety when it comes to any of the stores in Moca either. It's all the same cheap Chinese throw away garments and knock offs.

Meanwhile all of these businesses are members of their local Chinese Business Association so whenever they get caught blatantly breaking the law, they make a phone call and Uncle Lee makes sure the problem is quietly taken care of courte$y of his local connections.

Do you remember the "Kingdom Restaurant" in Bella Terra mall? They were gone after the pandemic. First Chinese I ever met there.
No.
I don't remember there being a Chinese Restaurant @ Bella Terra. I used to have a couple call center clients there prior to Covid. Three at one point.
Super Rico on Av. Duarte is my favorite one in the city. Food is quite good.

My mistake, it was in Plaza Internacional. No matter, it's gone. Thanks for the tip on Super Rico.

The Chinese are very good at pricing out others because they usually manufacture the goods anyway and also run a separate production run for themselves which they sell at lower prices. Even for higher end items. The other thing they are good at is offering bribes for officials in other countries to look away which is why they get away with breaking the import/trade laws most of the time. As you said, they then use political/diplomatic pressure when they get caught.

Sadly, I see no way out for DR because of the current relationship it has with China and US needs to make sure that China does not get a major foothold in the Americas.

I just saw that USPS won't be working for shipments from China. What happens to those Alibaba shipments to EPS for forwarding to the DR?
Too bad the Chinese can't just ship to the DR consumer directly , but alas the DR has no real mail system in place.

I don’t think they need much help. Rumor is that the reason the DR has seen a boom of Chinese stores and “malls” is because the Chinese government fully finance their stores including the cost of building them and all the merchandise (which is imported from China except a few things.).
