Rocky - Thanks for the great post. My paperweight sitting on my desk for the last 3 months collecting dust is now finally usable as a laptop!

You just made my day.
If it were just that, that got accomplished, I'd still be a happy camper.
Thanks Dude.

After 2 days of using Vista I have found this:

1) you are 100,000 times more likely to commit suicide using this software than any other

2) my microsoft word documents cannot be opened by non-vista users

3) my scanner cannot work because there is no driver for it

4) the print button in MS-Office - Word took me 30 mins and 2,000 hairs to find, its in the left top corner when you hit the swirly thing. I mean, why put a 'print' thing on the menu or the icon of a printer when you can hide it behind a swirly thing?!

however, I now have 5 boxes of useless fonts on my menu which serve no purpose but to force programmers to remove the print button.

5) I cannot send photos or files because it goes automatically to MS Outlook , guess it defaults to there. Can't figure out how to change default to windows mail.

6) on the 2nd day of usage i get a lag or delay in everything i do.

7) when i put a cd in the cd drive, it automatically copies it to the hard drive even if I don't want to.

i am too tired to finish this list, i'd rather argue with one of my crazy ex girlfriends than use this software again. gonna tell IT to reinstall XP.

Man,
I feel your pain.
I say go for it and put XP into it, as long as you're 100% sure that XP has all the necessary drivers for your particular model.
If not, we'll vanquish the little bugger, if it's the last thing we do.

It's a pain on both, but it's quite easy to get a new desktop with XP, while it's near impossible to get a new laptop with anything but Vista, these days.

The title of the thread being laptops I thought the problem was just with laptops. I recently purchased a new desktop with Vista and I don't have any of the problems being mentioned here. For me, Vista is running just as smooth as can be. It takes a little time getting used to some of the changes but other than that no problems.

I am using the Vista Home Edition Premium with 2gigs of Ram.

2 gigs of ram helps a lot and desktops often have more powerful faster processors, even if the rating appears the same as laptop processors, which try to conserve energy for running on batteries.
That being said, are you saying that your desktop didn't have Windows Defender on it with all those stupid pop up windows?
What anti virus program do you have on it.
Have you defragged?
Have you done all the things mentioned in this thread, and if so, isn't it a lot faster than before?

I have had the pc maybe five weeks. My harddrive is only 25% full. Yes I have all of these pop up windows that need to double check every move you want to make. I know in time I will come back to this thread and make the defender change. Right now I will deal with it just to make sure all things are truly A-OK the way the pc was shipped.

The pc came with a 30 day free trial Norton Anti-virus. After 30 days I removed Norton and am currently using the free McAfee anti-virus provided by my cable modem company.

The only other thing I have done was to add a wireless router.

As far as speed? I have no problems.

I forgot..........I used the Windows defrag first. When that was finished I used the one in this thread and the new defrag program reported a 1% increase. I like the new defrag because of it's visual display. Keep in mind my pc is virtually brand new and did not have much time to get fragmented.

I have been following the thread from post #1 because I know in time I will be back doing a lot of the things mentioned.

Again, great thread and a LOT of work on your part.

Kool.
If Windows Defender is active and you stop it, that'll make a substantial difference in speed, and if you happen to have Norton anti virus on it, removing it will also make a big difference.
Between the two, maybe 50% faster after stopping/removing both.

It took me awhile, but i took Rocky's advice. I removed norton anti virus. as i have xp i removed windows defender completely. My boot up and shut down times are 60% faster, I timed it. Pages on the internet open much faster. When i installes AVG, it did find 3 viruses that norton missed. Thank You Rocky!!!
Hey Weltillo,
It is I who thanks you, because cleaning puters is my hobby, and I love the reward at the end of seeing that puppy just gliding along, and to hear how well it went for you, makes my day.

Now goto Ad-Aware @ Lavasoft - The Original Anti-Spyware Company - Lavasoft and download and install add-adware

you will be amazed how much garbage you still have

a bit faster ...

Remove windows mess(up)enger (live) and install an alternative Jabber client

you want even faster ...

Stop using internet explorer
i may not look faster, but Firefox is not so hard married to the locally stored files/websited (and garbage) as IE does.
Is more difficult to hack
And if you install options as Adblock Pro and The Auto update routine a lot of those irritating advertisements on internetpages disappear as snow for the sun.

More save an a bit more speed

Remove Outlook
Install Eudora/Thunderbird or whatever alternate

Remove the Big FilePile of MsOffice
Install OpenOffice

Still wanting more speed and more security ..........

Remove the last parts of Microsoft that is left on your PC named: Windows

Install or change to an "alternative" operating system and that cam be everything from amiga/atari/bsd/unix/rs6000/aix/os2/linux/mac

"Alternative" is a wrong word, because most of those systems are older than windows only lacked a lot of marketing to keep them so highly promoted as windows

get a mac, the new OS X op system is flawless so far. It took about an hour to upgrade from the old OS X to this new OS 10.5.....i haven't run into a ms document yet I can't open. The mac file system just seems to make more visual sense. I was forever loosing files / documents, etc in some obscure ms file system.

ROTFLMAO !!! :) :) :)

-Are you comparing MS Vista to a storm that the brave user has to endure until MS finally decides to push Windows 7 out (who might be more of the same anyway) ?

Honestly, Marco, when it rains, there's no such thing as a roof, and a dry environment !

I now recommend to the general public to switch to Mac, and the more "tech-savvy" to switch to Linux. Windows XP will soon join Windows 98 in the museum...

MS Vista sucks so much, it hurts !
