But these are not official elections, just a straw vote type?

Hard to credit any sort of elections in Haiti. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/07/opinion/older-americans-power.html

..."Adding to the instability, gangs stormed the airport road on Friday, shutting down businesses and putting Haiti’s police force on high alert in anticipation of more violence on Monday.

The Montana Accord has called for the formation of a transitional government, with its leader, Fritz Alphonse Jean, at the helm to restore security before ultimately holding elections. By continuing to support the current government, the group says, the United States is essentially choosing a side."...

The US/CORE group keeps insisting on elections -- when there are no credible structures in place - no Electoral Council, no proper distribution of voting credentials - no stability on the ground.

The sooner they get behind the actual choices that have been made by the Haitian civil society - the better for all...

The "internationals" are most likely working hard behind the scenes...
One can only hope that they figure out how to actually put the leaders that the Haitians appear to want -- in place. https://haitiantimes.com/2022/02/02...haiti-as-leadership-legitimacy-is-questioned/

..."Civil society coalitions and former government officials who worked under Moise have joined the calls for Henry’s departure. The Montana Accord — a prominent civil society group composed of women’s rights, religious groups, labor and other representatives — has even named its own president and prime minister, to lead a transitional government.

With Henry saying he intends to stay in power, political analysts have said that Haiti faces a crisis of legitimacy, with little hope for political consensus if the government refuses to step down or share power.

Despite demands for transitional leadership, civil society groups have little ability to assert their power, said Henry “Chip” Carey, a Georgia State University political scientist and Haiti analyst.

“The only way they’re going to do it nonviolently is by getting the government to give it up,” said Carey. “It’s got quasi-constitutional symbolism going on, so its legitimacy is strong enough, as long as the Haitian police force backs this government.”

What possible difference could it make regardless of who the figure heads are?
