Let's see - McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Dominoes, and now Taco Bell. If Popeye's ever opens, I might have to move to Puerto Plata!
A Chipotle and I'm going.
They are all discovering Puerto Plata. When will the first chain discover there is a permanent base of American tourists & permanent residents to buy fast food in Sosua ?
I would love a Taco Bell here. While Burger Nation is good there is room for a fast food place with a drive up.
Hey Sonic - are you listening ?

I am hoping a Starbucks comes to Puerto Plata next.
That's a good sign POP is moving on up. These fast food chains are a good sign POP is attracting investors.

PepsiCo owns all 3, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC. So what are the odds that KFC is next on the same street.
Pepsi sold its stake in all 3 some years ago to YUM brands. (ticker symbol YUM). Hopefully, this international expansion will drive growth/earnings as the stock has been a dog for the last 5 years.

It is the Dominican Republic, It's not about what gringos want it's about what Dominicans want and these places are mostly frequented by Dominicans.
A company decides what a market will support. They do demographic studies, location research and competition analysis.
They don't care if their customers are going to be Dominican, American, Canadian, French, Haitian or Chinese. Whoever has the coin of the realm are welcome.
Customers are customers.
And it certainly appears Dominicans want these American fast food joints because they are packed with Dominicans.
Styrofoam containers of rice, beans and greasy chicken aren't fading away because of Taco Bell.
Population is increasing so there is room for more fast food chain stores.

I musta missed that. What year did it close?
I don't remember the exact year. 2016 maybe? They had a small portable trailer located in the Super Pole parking lot where that real estate building now is. They did a test market for about eight months and then shut down. It was always really busy. Not sure what happened.

Somehow, I missed that, too(?). For the purists, it not like authentic Italian New York pizza, but I always liked it in the US. Tasted good to me.

Live can be strange, many of you wish there were more of the fast food companys arround you. I have them ALL arround 5 minutes from my home on one only street, and never use them (ok sometimes we order a pizza) For lunch I prefer dominican food at the typical comedor, Moro de Guandules, pollo guisado y ensalada mixto, much more healther than the fast food crap and every day cooked fresh, and no matter where in the country you eat it...

One of the main reasons I like them is right in the name - fast food. They all have drive thru's, also. Many times I just don't have the time to sit down at a restaurant and order a meal. They're not something I'd be using every day, but it's nice to have the convenience and variety.

The last thing I would ever hope for in the DR would be a Starbucks. Well, just behind a Haitian Invasion and a Tsunami as the last thing.

Horrible coffee at ridiculous prices, I despise them in the USA for that.

As for the fast food folks or those that hate it, different strokes... Starbucks: Forgetaboutit.

Too late… there’s already about a dozen Starbucks spread across the country… ☕️

We're witnessing the golden age for franchises (local and foreign brands) in the DR.

- Foreign brands (Starbucks, Juan Valdez, TacoBell, Popeyes, etc) are targeting new low and upper middle class dominicans, not expats

- A new boom of local brands are now repackaging their offer and frachising their brand. A good example of this is Gavy Pechurina, a famous picapollo that started in the slums of Santo Domingo and now they have a branch in major cities around the DR including POP (next to Javilla Tours).

The amount of people making lines just ordering picapollo days ago (in a city that there's tons of picapollos) is huge.

In DR they're owned by two different entities (Taco Bell, Bell Dominicana is owned by one of the relatives of Vimenca). Pizza Hut/Wendys is owned by Raya Foods (Rainieri Family, PuntaCana)
They are the franchisees. The name and brand are owned by Yum Brands to which the franchisee pays royalties for the rights to use the name(s).

Similar to the Trump hotel that never got built in Cap Cana was not owned by Trump, but the name was licensed to a local group of investors….that eventually filed for Bankruptcy protection.
