These prices are burial. Get rid of tolls, problem solved.
The DR is not the only place that has tolls. Actually, tolls have been around quite a while in the DR. This stretch of highway, the price has always been on the high side IMO. At least compared to what they used to be. I have seen quite a number of news articles recently about the rise in prices.

Tolls NEVER Improve the Road conditions .. its only a great way to STEAL MONEY . and once they get a taste ,the tolls will just continue to go up and up.

True. The only toll I ever saw totally disappear was on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island. They said they’d remove it when the road was paid for, and they did. I doubt it’s ever happened since then anywhere.

I remember the tolls in and out of NJ to NY we paid almost daily (for some reason we never bought a pass) when we would spend time there. The first time we drove from Santo Domingo to Samana a few years ago, the price of the tolls was crazy. If I remember correctly there were like 3. I remember WW talking about the prices of those tolls. I guess I am used to the tolls, growing up we had them (toll road from Chicago to Indiana), then living in NY/NJ.

Yes, the tolls on the road from Las Americas to Samaná are outrageous!

Not to veer further off , but the Hutchinson Parkway also had a Toll of 25 Cents ,, im going back a ways ... they literally took it out because it actually cost MORE to Collect the Money, than they collected.. Ie Salaries, equipment , maintenance.. etc for just the Toll Booth .
Point is only a Govt . would have trouble BREAKING EVEN by literally STOPPING traffic to Collect Cash for doing nothing

That is mind boggling .

This may be why you only pay leaving Santo Domingo, and not entering. Half the staff and upkeep.

We're doing some planning, had to find out tolls between the capital and PUJ, already though to ask here but then found this. All the tolls from RDVial, I don't think it includes the Circunvalaciones though.

CT got rid of tolls statewide in the 1980’s and it has the 5th best highways in the USA. Supposedly, nowhere can have good highways without tolls or at least that’s one of the excuses for having tolls, but… Something tells me the tolls aren’t there just to fund highway maintenance. It’s also interesting how many highways become bumpier once you cross into NY (I-95) and especially in NYC considering there are tolls in NY. Florida has a lot of tolls, but at least the highways are good and smooth everywhere you go.

The DR is different due to the low tax pressure. Despite what people say about DR taxes, overall people pay less total taxes than even those in a typical Latin American country. What the DR has are very high tax rates on a few taxes which tend to be general and then very low tax rates on other things (such as property taxes.)

The DR needs to either increase the tax pressure by increasing those taxes that are extremely low and lowering some of the general tax rates such as ITBIS. The way taxes exist now is one where those with the least income are paying a higher percentage in taxes than those with higher incomes.

The alternative is to leave taxes as they are now and create more tolls. For example, it doesn’t make sense that all the major highways leaving SD have tolls, but none do in Santiago except the beltway which has one toll, the one and only in the entire Cibao region. At least with the recent upgrades done to the Duarte Highway entering the city a new toll should had been added.

With that said, I also doubt all the money collected in the few tolls there are in the DR actually go to maintaining the highways.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia_Highway_5 I have no objection to paying tolls if thexroads are good and shorten my journey. Anyone that have driven through central Santiago really appreciates the bypass
