After time to give it careful consideration, a hybrid model of a rock wrapped in a flaming cloth would seem to be the best of both worlds.

This rock throwing on Autopista Duarte makes news regularly at least since 2014.

A couple of examples:

You can google for more.

As I remember, a few years ago some transportation companies said they cancel their bus services after 6 PM on Autopista Duarte for that reason.

Regarding this burnt oil thing, It's something new that I have never heard before, but there is always a first time for everything

You are correct. Many of the transport companies did threaten to shut down their service and still many others charge more money if you are arriving at night.

While I never experienced this issue arriving early AM when arriving to either STI or SDQ, I did experience it in Bavaro. While riding with a Dominican friend about 10:30 one evening there was a loud thud against the front right passenger fender (later determined to be from a piece of concrete block). Instead of immediately pulling over he instinctively reached into his center console and pulled out his gun and kept driving.

Given my US mindset I thought it rather odd to not stop and check. His response to me was that in that area it was fairly well known that individuals will throw an object, get you to stop and then proceed to either offer some form of assistance for money or rob the vehicle. The way they operate is that one hurls an object to get you to stop and a short distance ahead one or two would approach you after you got out to check for damage.

The driver not only did not stop but accelerated out of the area and then checked to find a huge dent with concrete residue on the right front fender.

This was many years ago and I have never had another issue, but it does happen. Thieves also often target cars leaving the airports and try to get then to pull over knowing full well those passengers may be carrying valuables. One of my drivers would routinely do a complete u turn out of the airports and act like he was returning to determine if anyone might be following him.

Respectfully,

I stop all the time on the highway, to urinate, buy whatever from a store run errands, never ever have I had a problem. That circle turn by the military base on Ave February is as scary of a place I have seen at night, never have I had a problem. Street vendors dangle everything in front of you but the kitchen sink completely distracting drivers. Never have I heard of robberies there. I heard the area is called the ring of fire, but I don't know why.

You stop to urinate beside the highway? Doesn't sound very classy Big, I thought you were all VIP guest lounges and hors-d'oeuvres

Wait, are you referring to Pinturas?

No I think he means the intersection of Charles and Autopista Las Americas where you can pull off the highway to go onto Avenida España and several miles later you pass the military bases. That's like a circular intersection. I don't think it's particularly scary, other than there isn't a merge lane at the top where there ought to be one. If not then he's talking about the left turn you make just after the military bases to then go down the eastern side of the Malecon which runs next to the Marina, in front of Riviera Colonial, that's also a circular section, but also not scary.

I should organise a night out for Big in Guandules or La Cienega, that's what most people think of as scary.

Yes, the truth is I must urinate. However, I do not place my elbows on the dining room table, slurp my food, use a toothpick at the table and chew gum when socializing. It's never too late to break your old habits.

I doubt he means the Charles de Gaulle/Las Americas intersection. We have an apartment next to it, crossed it many times and it is in sight from our balcony. It’s sometimes busy with people because of the busstops but most stay off the road as traffic is actually moving most of the day. Not scary at all but also not a place to expect chiseled jaw men disposing the remains of Dom Perignon, after all this is SD Este.

Pinturas is like they grabbed a busy pueblo intersection and dropped it on a highway. Wonder when the new overpass will be ready, ironically it would also add another elevation to throw stuff from.

Plaza de la Bandera! was what I was referring to.

I was driving to Puerto Plata and a car was in the next lane. It was a rent-a-car back I first came and my frigging Diesel Hyundai Santa Fe had problems (never by a Korean diesel)
I wasn't looking but my car ran over what I think was a milk jug.
Then the car next to me honked and animatedly pointed and I pulled over.
Water was dripping from the frame, but you could not tell from where, and the passenger was pointing up into the engine saying I had a problem but he was on the way to his friend's mechanic shop and I should follow and they could fix it cheap.
I said no I had a mechanic in Puerto Plata (I did) and was going there to check on my car that was in the shop, which was true.
Turns out my car wasn't finished and I drove the rent a car for a few more days and there was no problem.

Similar to above but cheap and creative I must admit. Was parked in a lot. Came out of the store a guy is looking under my car. A good deal of water or something. It took me 20 seconds to see the scam. He had a mechanic in the gas station across the street he said. I got in my car without saying anything and left him dumbfounded as I drove away. Needless to say he put the water there and nothing was wrong with my car...........

It's absolutely amazing how these guys can diagnose what's wrong with your car (or at least point out that there is a problem) so quickly... They should have their own taller and be very rich due to this talent... I wonder how that's usually not the case though???

Exactly because it is bogus. Zero possibility of this happening here. As a previous poster indicated, "fear mongering" and it sells. Keep buying!
I might have guessed that getting a straightforward answer to a simple question would be out of the question. I still don't understand why there is "zero possibility" of someone pouring oil from a bridge onto a car in order to rob the occupants.

I don't think its scary there. I walk these roads daily, early morning with my dogs. But, I never go out at night anymore. I do hear motor bikes racing by in the middle of the night.

Eeew I think getting your dick out and having a p!ss beside a busy highway is way more disgusting than any of those things. Funny how us ladies manage to go on road trips without the need to pee beside the highway.
