The Dominican Union of Nightclubs is not happy that the new authorities at the Ministry of Interior & Police are controlling their activities. Indeed, the night club union issued a warning on Wednesday, 2 October 2024 that its members will take to the streets in protest if the current wave of business closures continues. This response follows the “Operation Guarantee of Peace” led by the Ministry of Interior and Police, now under Minister Faride Raful, which has resulted in the temporary shutdown of numerous entertainment venues.

In the past four weeks, at least 30 nightclubs affiliated with the union have been closed, leading to what they complain are millions of pesos in losses and jeopardizing the livelihoods of numerous workers in the sector.

During the most recent enforcement actions, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Directorate (COBA) intervened in 34...

This will never work in the DR as it's a far too simple and logical solution... Same as with the transport unions...
It is becoming clearer that while the execution may be slow that the government has plans and that they can and are implementing them whether we like it or want to believe it. Like an inevitable next ice age. You don’t have to like it or even believe in it but it’s still going to happen.

While these folks are complaining, they have been temporarily closed until they take a "charla" instructing them what is and isn't acceptable, then they can reopen.
What they are really complaining about is the right to play blasting loud music taken away.

For some unexplained cultural reason vendors have the impression loud music attracts patrons, louder brings more of them. Notice..how few people talk softly. Many people are compelled to be loud, so they can be commanding over others. It is a normal behavior for them. Vendors have the compulsion to command, bring attention to their businesses, and use booming music as a tool. They need to turn down the volume or find a less annoying tool.

Believe me, I definitely like it and believe it. I know many things have improved and I'm very happy that measures like this against the noise are taken. My comment was really just about the intelligence of the complainers if I may... We have in fact lived close to a night club scene in POP and our elderly neighbors, who sleep their windows open (the second floor in a closed residencial) really suffered at times as they could not sleep at all... I think there were somewhat influential people living in the same neighborhood and even they could not make the discos stop blasting the whole town...

I also think part of the problem is that some of these venues have quite an open concept due to the climate, so it's more open air or without proper walls, and that makes the air carry the noise even further... If it's cold outside, you want to keep your business closed and heated and therefore the noise stays better inside...

A friend of mine works in the police HQ (he's a civilian). He has met the new boss several times and has said she is lovely but absolutely hard as nails. A lot of the old school police thought "Ah it's a woman she'll be a pushover" and they have said that she is frightening. It's about time someone sorted the police out, let's be honest. As Mrs Thatcher put it "If you want something said, ask a man, if you want something done as a woman"
