You should have asked me before assuming. I requested a timeline for the case, replied back 6-7 months. I asked for costs, they said they would email me with a contract and findings from an initial investigation. Dollars, pesos, wire transfer... whatever needed was ready as I'm very interested to unload this property. I took a week away from work to get this moving and feels like a waste. I should have visited several more firms during the time. Thought I would learn if 4 weeks was usual or if this is unique to my case.

My recommendation: forget about these guys. This is enough to preview what type of experience you would have with them if they took your case. Find a better alternative who actually wants your work/money and will get the job done without you having to micromanage them.
You should of paid a "retainer" , then we would not even be here.
Definitely, my first job out of college was Nordstrom so customer service is paramount to me. And working in tech I need quick responses, a month is mind blowing. It's so easy to respond back to an email, even if you don't have the answers. Never wise to place all your eggs in one basket. Looks like a return trip before the melting summer. I see nothing wrong that the OP did. NO response is not correct for ANY law firm. And the idea to pay a retainer when none was requested is stupidity at it's best..............

I was accompanied by my girlfriend who has recently closed on 2 real estate transactions in the U.S., we're both native Spanish speaker and thought the meeting went well. My sister who lives in the capital tells me that things just move much slower than I'm accustomed to. My girlfriend closed on her NJ house in 3 weeks, in contrast, our neighbor's closing on a Casa de Campo condo took close to 6 months (requires a mortgage) and details so many hurdles and weeks of non-response and having to be on top of people.
I've had consultations with Guzman and other lawyers. During the consultation they will just give you general information and answer basic questions. If at that time you wish them to do any further work and look more into your case, especially one like yours, it's now time to start discussing money and leave a retainer.
My experience with lawyers in DR has been relatively the same. At initial consultation any pertinent documents are handed over, a retainer is paid and whatever investigation or procedure is initiated. Then follow-ups are given and usually the totality of the service in quoted. I have never received a follow-up call or email from a lawyer I haven't retained.

So he is supposed to run over to their office and hand over money to the first person he sees after their arrogance in not returning his calls and Emails...................I dealt with a few lawyers myself here when I opened the Hard Rock Casino as GM. This firm would be fired so fast their head would be spinning......................

Perhaps I was assigned an overworked attorney. The person was younger than I expected. I did ask for the cost. I'm in tech sales, trust me that I asked how much. They said the cost would be detailed in the email, and from there if I agreed that I could send payment and the work would proceed. Perhaps they were required to request a retainer during the meeting and didn't. Perhaps they didn't want the case and couldn't tell me there. Many questions, but I was strongly interested, I'm calling and emailing the attorney directly and nada. My sister and I are the only heirs so I can't see a property title update being such a difficult ask.
I've learned that I should have scheduled appointments with at least 2-3 firms during my time in the capital, and made my decision based on those interviews. As with any major purchase, always get 2-3 quotes. If they do call or email back, I'll request to be assigned to another attorney.

If the lawyer wanted a retainer at that time he would have requested it. You have been here long enough to know lawyers here are not bashful about asking for money. There is NO excuse for NO contact here.................
