There is a simple answer to this high expense, opportunity, greed, and passive consumer advocates.

We have cell phones which we buy the cards for, however we recently purchased a Magic Jack. The works through your computer and costs 19.95 Us per year for all calls local and international. The phone number assigned to the phone uses the area code from the area where you are installing the service. We have an area code from the area in which we live in the US. In using the local area code our neighbors, friends and family can call us here for no charge.

It is not that expensive if your are calling within the DR but just like everything else year if it is goods or services outside the country the costs add up fast.

That's why so many play the game of leavinga lost call so you call her back and have to pay, because she has no minutos papi!

Which in itself opens a world of opportunities for you. You don't have to talk to her if you don't want to, just tell her "yo tampoco tenia minuto mami chula"

WHY SO EXPENSIVE YOU ASK?

Because Dominicans are dumb and slow as a rock. It takes employee, supervisor, supervisor's supervisor with multiple visit waiting on multiple lines and two hours to open a f'n sim card here. Same goes to every big chain stores in DR. Too many do nothing employees need to be watched over by do nothing multiple supervisors. Also greedy government with deep pocket adds fuel to a fire.

I just came back from Asia business trip. Four people walked in to cellphone stores near by hotel in Singapore and Malaysia all walked out within 15 minutes served by two people.

See the difference?

It's the unecessary overheads plus corrupt government.
